Running in

Starting to think about actually having the beast now (2 weeks to wait).

Was just wondering what the consensus is on running in. Should I take it easy for the first 500 miles?

Anything else i should watch out for?

any new car should be treated with respect ..new toys to play with ,different handling etc..i would enjoy the pleasure of having a new FFRR and cruise gently down the road and let everyone think 'lucky bar-steward'... Wink ... - .- -.

As per Scarey, just treat her with respect.

Don't floor it for a few months, if you want to be completely anal, change the oil at half intervals to pick up any machining debris. Apart from that, I don't think it's such a big deal with newer cars as it used to be, although if there is a "chance" that by being gentle for it's "formative months" will increase the lifespan of the engine, then I would say its worth it.

I had heard once ( long time ago ) that if you drive is soft at first it will always be quiet but not the fastest, and conversly if you drive it hard at first it will always be a quicker car (for its type) but noisy.

Not sure if that's true but if it were mine, I'd drive it softly. Not such a worry now but later in life you will reap the rewards.

Was all that I said the typical "Someone on t'internet once told me" type statement.? Mr. Green Ash

In the owners' manual it tells you that apart from not allowing the engine to "labour at low RPM in a high gear " which as it's an automatic you don't have a lot of control over, there isn't any running in in the old sense of the phrase necessary! I would ask " how long do you intend to keep the car?" Whistle

Is it better to run your car in by doing one long trip like London to Glasgow at steady RPM and speed or to take it over country roads for the first 1000 miles and giving the new gearbox a workout? 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

And it worth remembering that engines are designed to rev within the parameters specified. toodling around below 3k rpm all day is not necessarily beneficial at all...

I would agree with Tim and go for a very long drive - to Scotland say....

Combination of 75mph Motorway followed by a few twisty, hilly A roads and back and the car should be set up perfect Thumbs Up

When I picked mine up was told no running in required for new cars anymore. That said was also told to respect the brakes, let them bed in and don't slam them on to start with. Also new brakes are less effective than part worn - give it 500 miles. Oh and the heating/cooling of discs makes them harder, maybe abuse of new ones is the reason I've seen a few posts on warped discs? Who knows.

Don't go mad with the engine on day one, again 500 - 1000 miles before completely flooring it. But then a lot of this should be quite naturally achieved as generally you're not going to get in the new toy stick it in "S" and floor it out of the showroom. Getting used to the new handling, stopping, power, gears etc tends to lead to a more naturally tentative approach for long enough.

Just enjot it. Would suggest they are quite hard to break. Smile

Modern pistons , you have got the first 200 miles to bed them in and then you have got what you have got , i was told to get them warm and then use the full RPM range over 2 runs IE 100 mile runs, Heat cycles the engine and creates a piston to liner seal at TDC. Remember all the modern cars are put on a roller check and given full bore to check for leaks and power outputs as they leave the line. Far to many gone...
