Cycle the gearbox into different modes to see if it changes the noise. Nothing in the transfer box should be moving with the vehicle stationary, sounds louder at the back of the engine to me from the vid, but can’t think of anything which should be rotating there apart from the TC at idle....

At that sort of frequency, it’s roughly the action of 1 cylinder, it may be worth running some injector cleaner through the system in case there is a slightly sticky/noisy injector. My money would be more likely something like that. If you can get the cover off the engine and use a listening rod you may be able to narrow down where it is coming from, being very careful of the rotating parts obviously...... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

It's the viscous fan making the metallic clicking sound. Had the exact same noise on my 4.2 supercharged, once warm the clicking stopped. Replaced the viscous fan coupling (came with a new plastic fan) and the problem went.

Hi Neilly, did you replace the viscous fan and cure the clicking? Wife just informed me this morning that mine has started clicking, couldn’t hear it from inside though. Again only lasted 30 seconds ish.

Yes the fan was replaced and the clicking stopped. So hopefully it stays away..LOL. has been 4 months now and no noise.

Brill, thanks Neilly. Looks like they are a single piece assembly and coupling can’t be removed/replaced from the fan? Oh well, another little job to play with. Yeah mine started doing this when the weather cooled five years ago when I first purchased her... but always stops once engine is up to operating temp - and it never (well rarely) happens in summer. I recall somewhere reading/seeing that some owners had changed the viscous couplin/g unit and the problem was still there after replacement - so I never touched the thing. My 2012 TDV8 (70,000 miles) seems OK if a tad clicky clicky 'still' over five years later...
But my quite recent full service (had a known trusted mobile guy do it before my very own eyes on drive) of diffs, transfer box, remove all air box units to clean out and replace all screw fixings and both filters, engine oil and filter plus fuel and cabin filters and a complete clean up of lying codes and complete vehicle checks etc) had her running like an absolute dream (oooooooh so smooth) and she ran quite superbly even before. The viscous couplin/g clicky clicky noise has not been heard yet - but I'm sure the colder weather (solar minimum period remember ) will have it return, no doubt...
LR and RR establishments used over the past five years (last one a year ago) seem never to have even opened up the turbo filter boxes once, as the filter box screws were all seized, and the turbo one filter was certainly more than a year old (only about 2000-miles travelled since) and was probably possibly five years old or so (25,000-miles done since) and each time I had particularly asked for all these filters to be replaced!!! Which I don't think they EVER did... I reckon they could not be assed to try to sort the seized screws... And all my recent service was done in under three hours - including an attempt at getting the rear hatch wash wiper spray working again...
NO more LR RR extortionist blaggers for me, mates.
