Going to change both diffs and transfer case oil shortly. I’ve done a lot of searching on here, but can’t find a definitive post that shows which drain/refill plugs I need to replace? Is it best to replace both fill and drain plugs on both diffs, and do I change both on the transfer case or just the copper washers? Any help much appreciated. Chris

Thanks Greg.I had seen these but didn’t know if the recommendation was to change both filler and drain plugs, or just drain only. Also I guess I need to replace both copper washers on the fill and drain of the transfer case? Chris

Why would one replace the plugs?

Have the diffs changed since the earlier models?

I recently did an oil change on all three and there were no washers on the diffs, just plugs.

Replace the washers on the transfer case plugs. (I don't bother. I've never changed washers in over 50 years of servicing my own cars and bikes. Sometimes I've annealed copper washers before reusing them.) Ron B. VK2OTC

Are there any specific tools you'd need for the diffs and the TC?

I think you need a Hex bit (14mm?) for the plugs. Torque wrench too.

Any tips / advice most welcome !

I did mine and I don’t recall having the need for any special tools that I didn’t already have. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Cant remeber exactly but i did need to get a big hex key for 1 the i then put in a half inch drive socket as that was easier than using a spanner with it. Will have a look in he tool box. Also there was a square hole in the bolt that i got out with a radiator spanner, the ones with the half inch alen and square bit you get from tool station etc. The final one cant remember but didnt need anything special other than a socket set. Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

You need a 14mm Allen bit (for a socket wrench) for the diffs, and a normal 16mm (I think) hex socket for the transfer box. And a torque wrench that can be used for every plug or bolt - check that it can do quite low values. I think a 8-60 Nm torque wrench is a handy tool for working on diffs/transfer box/the gearbox.
An oil syringe is handy too.
Should you use new JLR drain and fill plugs? Personally I think that's overkill unless there's something wrong with the old bolts. I would use new copper washers on the transfer box bolts however. The diff bolts don't have any washers.

Checked my tool box and it was 14 mm hex key I got one with 14mm one side 17mm the other and used the 17mm socket set on it and worked well. Link to one like I got

And Yes you definitely need some sort of oil pump to get the new oil in as the fill holes are in an awkward spot so impossible to pour into them.

I used one for these and worked perfectly fine just had the right amount measured in a jug then pumped it it and re-tightened.
