TD6 low drive / snow mode

Have owned my TD6 for 8 years now and never used the switch on the centre console closed to the driver (the mountains logo)
I’m assuming it’s for traction in the snow etc, do I just switch to it when stationary? If it’s not been used for years, could I do damage selecting it?

Any advice or pointers appreciated

It’s to select low range on the gearbox. Nothing to do with traction control or any clever terrain response.... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

If you are going to try it , make sure you are on your drive and don’t need to go anywhere for a while...
They can get stuck either in neutral or low or somewhere in between.
If you want to try it then with the engine running at idle, put it into neutral and flick the switch, you should get a bong and then a message on the display telling you you are in low.
It is a low ratio transfer box for off road where you don’t need lots of revs but do need a lot of torque.
If you read the manual you can actually change in or out of low when moving but there is a particular procedure.
There is a procedure for calibrating the motor and also another for putting the transfer box into neutral for towing (you being towed)

Chaps I believe the Mountains logo switch is the HDC, not Low range, which from memory is on the passenger side of the tunnel Thumbs Up Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Shocked Scrap that, your right and I'm wrong... in my defence it has been well over a year since I sat in an L322 Rolling Eyes I know where it is in my RRC and ML Whistle

And low range is not necessarily snow mode... selecting manual and a lower gear will work well too! Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Surely low range is for things like off road and precision heavy towing.

For snow you want gentle careful driving in a reasonably high gear for the speed. Low range tends to be far too jerky (at least it was on my Disco 1).

I've just been exercising the switch in the hope it will work when I get the heavier towbar installed. Old 110 2.3 Petrol ???? - ????

I made the mistake of deciding it would be a good idea to try low range to get up to the road from my house in a foot of snow Monday. All worked fine, except it then resolutely refused to go back into high range.

Had to drive it about 7 miles to local LR indie at 25mph (which is 3k revs in 5th gear in low range).

Left it with them, to get a phone call that they got in it, selected high range and it went straight in. They did a diagnostics check, and no faults logged, ran the transfer box through the calibration procedure and verified it switches between low and high range on demand.

Anyways, I'm not tempted to push that button again.

In fairness, indie didn't charge me for the fix - so can't fault McDonald Landrover in Oswestry Thumbs Up 2004 Vogue TD6 - Remapped Smile

Cheers all

Decided after reading some of the horror stories to leave the switch well alone, especially as it hasnt been touched for the 7 years I've owned her.

Gentle right foot was enough for the snow last week Thumbs Up

Once or twice a month I will go through the various modes. Hi/lo, Hdc, ride height up and down etc.
Like air con, use it or lose it. I'm OCD with things like that. If it's on the car it has to work, even if I'm unlikely to use it. Rolling Eyes 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal
