can you swap front air springs?

I have a brand new passenger side strut that I purchased to have as a spare but I now have a leaking drivers side air spring.

Can I remove the new air spring from the passenger side strut and install it on the drivers side while I wait for the new drivers side unit to arrive?

any info appreciated. Thanks

I just looked at my old air springs (I used the arnott replacements last summer - http://www.arnottindustries.com/part_LAND_...id159.html 2nd item down), and while the springs themselves look the same L&R (numbers were illegible in the rubber) and might work, the bigger problem is what's inside: the arnott replacements come with what are under dimensioned bump stops IMO (top piece in the small parts on the pic) so that the bump stops which sit on the cartridge rod (shock absorber rod) fit through the lower hole in the air bags. The bump stops are more like coil spring bump stops- meaning that in the event of an EAS fault that drops the car to it's bump stops I will have NO suspension left. The OEM units are much larger and do not fit through the lower hole. I assume the metal clamp around the spring/strut bearing at the top is installed after the spring is mounted on the cartridge and the bump stop installed from the top.

Clear? Rolling Eyes

You could try to 'fish' through the upper and lower holes on the strut bearing to place the bump stop on the rod or find a pipe of similar diameter to the rod and push this through as a guide when the unit is disassembled... I'd prob not risk damaging a new airspring tho. The entire strut is avail for around €350 new these days.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for you help on this. I will call arnott today, have you been happy with the product besides the bump stop not being as big as the OEM? When I had my p38 RR I installed all new arnott air springs and the products seem very good.

thanks again

The springs themselves are great. The bump stop is under dimensioned and so is the silly push nut that holds the spring on the lower perch. Everything else is OEM or +.

Glad you cpould understand what I was trying to say. Between phone calls and typing emails it got a bit confusing (I thought anyway) Laughing

Steve,

your pretty much correct, I spoke with arnott and they said I could swap air springs if I had to as they are the same even though they have a different part # on them . They actual strut is clearly side specific which we know.

Right now its -40C at night here in canada and I am having a tough time trying to track which spring is leaking as they all seem to be leaking. I know I have a leaky front drivers side air spring but yesterday, the rear sank also. I left the drivers side door open so it would not try to level itself so it would be easier to see the leaky spring. Its still not totally clear though. Maybe I will try disconnecting the battery just to be sure it does not try to level itself.

Given your tempretures maybe a frozen valve block due to moisture in the system could be adding to your leaking spring woes. Can you get it indoors for a while to thaw then check? 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS

Thanks for the reply.

I have had the truck in and out of garages these past few weeks getting other work done and the suspension still drops.
I will try to get it into a shop and check with soapy water. When running it levels itself nicely and the pump barely runs! I dont get it Shocked
