Battery flat!

Went out yesterday morning to start it and click! No start great! I used it the night before, surly the first cold night this season didnt kill my battery? I fitted a new one around 6 months ago, it was a Varta one but never did seem to crank quite the same as before. How do I test to see if it’s a faulty battery? 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

one conclusive way is to do a drop test on it, most garages can do this... ... - .- -.

Ok well don’t think that’s what they did at Halfords.

Not been having much luck really. Called RAC out who said battery was too flat to test, but put a little charge i it to get me started. He said that the battery is not accepting a full charge, alternator was charging but only 33amps was going in instead of 60amps. I called the batterymegastore who I bought it from and he said my warranty was void because my battery was allowed to go flat. He told me to agm boost charge it then put it on normal till it reaches 13.5v but it never went past 12.28 in 24hrs.

I then took it to Halfords who tested it and it showed “good. Recharge” but cranking amps were down 682 of 920 and it didn’t start very well. Halfords said the battery was faulty, same as what the RAC had said previous day. I called up the batterymegastore online again and they said it’s not faulty because the Halfords test shows it as good and I need to recharge it. They said they would test it for me at a cost of £20! You can imagine my answer to that!!! 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

I think the drop test isn't nearly as dramatic as it sounds, they just connect it up to a small machine & read the display.

You either need to pursue Battery Megastore or take it on the chin & buy a new one from somewhere else.......

Maybe agree criteria with then beforehand ? You'll pay the £20, but if CCA is showing less than say 80%, they refund it & replace the battery ?

I had a very good experience with Euro Car Parts - competitive price & when the Bosch battery packed up some 3 years later, they tested & replaced it without a quibble Thumbs Up

Just to barge in with a question, in the shed I've got one of those old Frankenstein-type devices. What may be asbestos sheets hold two handles with points on the other end, connected by some springy strip metal with a meter in the middle.

You poke this at the battery terminals and the meter reads red or green through the smoke. Shocked

Are these things any use nowadays as battery test devices? Should I prize it or put it on ebay? Old 110 2.3 Petrol ???? - ????

That's Censored , the battery wasn't "allowed" to go flat, it went flat on it's own and couldn't be stopped.

It only has one job to do, hold charge, which it has failed to do.

That's like buying a new car that breaks down the the dealer saying they wouldn't fix it because you allowed it to break down.

I'd be back to them lickety split and insist it be sorted under warranty.

In response to hamlet as my quote was apparently unnecessary!!!

I agree, if the RAC says its faulty then I would class that as an independent verification of it being faulty.
Did you pay via credit card as they will cover it for you or failing that trading standards.
I bought my Bosch from eurocarparts on eBay as it was cheaper to buy on eBay and then collect from my local store. It’s the biggest Bosch that will fit in and has been on for a few years now and I only drive my FF every two weeks and it cranks like a bastard 😬

Think this is the one and can’t recall if you have done a battery drain test

I bought it on eBay back in March via Paypal so nothing I can do ref money back. I called trading standards/consumer rights which is ran by Citizens advise who told me a bunch of legal stuff to say which I had already done on the phone while I was being polite to battery megs store, then I just lost my rag a little and told them what I thought of their bullshit warranty. So basically there’s not a lot I can, I told them on the phone I would be in touch with trading standards and she said do what I need to but they wouldn’t do anything unless I paid £20 😡. I also told them I would be on lots of forums explaining what a dishonourable company they are, again age said up to me! I said any company with honour would just sort the issue out. 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

England

This is an informative page on the subject

Regardless of where you buy (in the UK), 12 months guarantee under consumer law.

Proving that you / your car didn't kill the battery, another matter.

(was credit card used to purchase through paypal? ....) .

I believe that if the purchase is made through paypal then the protection on a credit card is void. Open to correction. It may depend on the bank and their T&Cs. John
