USB connection to iPhone for music

I'm sure this has been asked before, I have no problem connecting via Bluetooth but when I connect via USB and select "USB Connection" I get a message asking me to connect via USB Grrrrrrrrr.

Any ideas anyone? I'm pretty tech savvy but can easily miss the obvious.
