Buying woes

Good evening folks,

I appreciate there’s been a thousand of these buying advice threads, so I’ll keep mine short.

Would I be completely mad to consider buying a 100,000 mile old L322 and putting a further 20k miles a year on it? Am I asking for trouble?

To put this relatively small mileage into perspective, Highways England ran their Disco 4’s for 3 years and between 250,000 and 320,000 miles, triple shifting every day of the year.

With correct maintenance and history, 100,000 is just a number and at least you’re likely to give it regular use once you’ve got it Thumbs Up

Fantastic, thanks both. That's just what I wanted to hear, not sure the bank manager's going to be best pleased though.

Bought my 2004 v8 petrol with 135,000 from a renowned member of this forum 7 years ago and ran it problem free until this year when I replaced the chain guides and alternator at 187,000 miles. Engine etc and running gear all still good.

It's about how it has been looked after and not the actual numbers! Thumbs Up

Diseasel I'm afraid. I (nor my clients) could stomach the petrol fuel bills, unfortunately.

Ah ok. Make sure to have the auto box closely looked at before purchase as the diesel version box is usually made of toffee.. and can give problems if it’s not been looked after properly or has towed heavy loads.... ______________________________

Good advice, thanks. I'm presuming the oil in the 'box would have been changed regularly if it's a full dealer service history?

Not necessarily, check the written history, receipts etc and don’t take their word for it. If you can take it for a test drive with an experienced Range Rover owner who’ll be able to do the usual trouble inducing checks or book it in to an independent and have them check it.

Have a look at the posts on here for gearbox problems and the signs they give as a bad one will cost a fortune to repair or replace and could sour an otherwise pleasurable ownership experience. ______________________________

Simon, you mean the toffee-box on the TD6 right?
V8's 3.6 or 4.4 diesel don't have such issues as I understand.

Deanphoto, what year / price range are you looking at?

It’s the TD6 that has the gearbox valve body made from soft steel, or alloy or whatever it actually is......

HI Greg,

I'm looking at 2007+, under 100k, for circa £10-£11k. Doesn't leave me with many options and I do wonder if the FF might have to be the next car purchase, rather than this one. Still, no harm in seeing a few and dreaming, right?
