What do you all think of this as a head unit upgrade?

I’ve been looking for a headunit to upgrade mine as the rear compartment gubbins is suffering from incontinence....

So I’ve spotted this 10.1” android unit where the screen sits proud of the unit by about 2” thereby missing the dash top. I realise that it’s a standard 2 din and not designed for the Range Rover / X5 but you can buy a double din conversion that fills the hole left by the original headunit but accepts the new 2 din unit, and the new unit can be tilted for the optimum viewing angle.

I’ll probably have to buy the 6m cable to the boot and a cable conversion for the front but I think it looks doable unless someone on here has experience of such a conversion going wrong...

Anyway here’s the link to the bay for the headunit and the 2 din conversion ‘ cable.

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Westminster 4.4 V8 Santorini Black

My son installed a Pumpkin head unit in his Golf about 12 months ago and it's proved very reliable. It's remarkably OEM looking and was pretty plug'n'play so your install will be a bit more complex but the hifi, phone set-up, reversing camera and general android functionality are all far better than you'd expect at these prices.

I've thought about this myself... but do you guys who go for aftermarket head units simply accept the trade-off of not having the off-road graphics any more, or am i missing something?

Good luck with it. I'd love to see some pics of the final installation. 2012 TDV8 Westminster in the New Forest

No 4x4 info on the non touchscreen.....

You lose clock set, mpg and car specific info, unless you can get it on the new units now..... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

I don’t have 4x4 info on mine but I was lead to believe that you still have the mpg, distance remaining etc still available on the instrument cluster. As far as the clock is concerned you can set it at 12 o’clock with the fuse removal trick.

I’d be interested to learn one way or the other about the instrument cluster information being available after the head unit removal..

Thanks Stan, just had a good read through and it all seems rather straight forward.

Bembo - I was just going to rewire as per Petes write up and just ignore the sub.. ______________________________

im trying to picture what the set up will look like pal , the mercs etc have these floating screen set ups these days but not in 10" flavour , I feel the RR dash is big enough to take it and not look odd thow

I think the Range Rover dash is man enough to take it, but I’ll take the new screen measurements and cut out a template then hold it in place just to see how big it really is.

That should give us some idea if it’ll obscure anything like the vents... ______________________________
