High mileage TDV8

Hi all,

I am new to the forum. I am contemplating purchasing a 2012MY 4.4TDV8. It has c. 100k miles on the clock. I have never bought a car with such high mileage and naturally am bit nervous. The car does come with full service history (independent garage). I do not drive much (around 8k miles a year). I wanted to get your opinion with:

a) Is it better going for a 2010 model with around 70k miles or less on the clock?
b) Any independent specialists based in North London who I can use not only to inspect the vehicle but later on for maintenance.
c) As an alternate, I look for a very good condition 3.6TDV8?

Many thanks for your help.

A.

Imho, go for the 4.4, its got the 8 speed box and digi dash.
According to members on here, it's vastly superior to the 3.6.
As regards mileage, as long as price reflects it, I wouldn't worry too much.
Just my 2p worth. Laughing

Hi

I had the same dilemma - should I get a lower milage 3.6 or higher milage 4.4. On the advice of this fine forum I went for the 4.4.

Got mine at 104,000 with full service history. It was one owner, a company car and serviced by the same dealer that supplied it new. The 4.4 has it's (smaller) maintenance issues but generally the 3.6 is considered more risky especially in regards to lunching turbos.

Check out my own post from last year when I embarked on the same journey: http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic40852.html

Being a first-timer, I have been blown away by the Range Rover experience. There is nothing like it. Then the 4.4 experience - it's sublime. Lazy yet immensely powerful at lower revs, it will go like thunder when you press the button and, together with the 8-speed provides a driving experience that can't be matched.

Like you I can justify a higher miler because I will also do around 8k per year. So over 5 years I'll level out to an average milage. But it will depreciate like any example. Prices are frequently under £20k for 100k plus exapmples too. I can't think of any other car you can get for this money that gives you so much car.

I read a Clarkson review of the 2011 (can't find it since) where he said there was a running in-joke - all the guys at Top Gear would talk about any of the new cars that came through their door and they'd inevitably say yeah it's good - but not as good as a Range Rover. Clarkson, Hammond and May all have RR's and the crew production team use them for shooting from out of the back.

For me 100k is a psychological barrier more than any real maintenance issue. A lot of vehicles come on the market for this reason; "It's hit 100k time to get rid of it" If it been properly maintained then issues would have been sorted. I read about a 55k car that a guy had bought and then a bunch of things went wrong over the next 10k.

Everybody will chime in here and say the turbo drain mod should have been done so check that out too. That's not the only thing but there is plenty on this site so there should not be any surprises.

Best of luck, dive in - you won't regret it!

. Cheers, Greg

Thank you buddy for the comprehensive feedback. It is definitely the 100k mental block that I need to convince myself of. I have heard rave reviews of 4.4 engines so I guess that is the one to go for. Plus, in 2 years time when I look to sell, the 3.6 would have become quite an old engine. I am moving on from an X5 and definitely looking forward to the luxury claims of driving a FFRR Smile

Mine is just about to hit 207k - it's a 4.2 supercharged so not the same, but generally 100k miles is nothing to these cars.

As stated above. I don't own one but from what I've read, the 4.4 tdv8 model has a better motor, gearbox and electrics. It must be good as I think my 3.6 is very nice. ______________________________

Agreed that 4.4 TDV8 is better than 3.6 to drive, and in general I'd say a high mileage younger car is a better bet than a lower mileage older one. Older cars might also be pre-Euro 5, and might incur higher charges in London?

Have a search using the bar at the top of the page for issues that affect the later cars. Corrosion can be a problem (tailgate, rear wheel arches, wheel nuts swelling, window trim, tailgate straps and mounts, brake lines). If the car is used in heavy traffic all the time then maybe diesel particulate filter issues might be relevant, one of the turbos can get sticky if not used much, it only comes on above 2,500 rpm. Brake calipers can seize, the rear brakes only come on if braking heavily or the car is heavily loaded, worth checking and freeing off/replacing if necessary.

Good luck. Only Range Rovers since 1988

...and have a read of the 'buyer's experience' think it's in the wiki. No need to be worried just be thorough, check every single thing functions. Check the rear arches too. Getting a garage to check is tricky I tried that and got an RAC. Was pricey and not ideal as they don't know L322 specifics. Indy garages I found reluctant to to pre-purchase checks from a liability POV. Selling dealers will be resistant to an Indy check. Which is why AA/RAC do them on site. Ideally you'd get it up on a ramp whatever the method.
. Cheers, Greg

Gonna just double up on the previous advice - better a high miler that has cruised motorways for 20,000 miles per year than a "low" miler which sits in traffic queues in town or even worse, only pops down the road and never gets warm - engine condensation issues and wear and tear on components far more likely on a low miler than a high one.

Just to give you some more solace, I bought mine sight unseen (albeit from a renowned forum member) at 135,000 miles 7 years ago and it now is approaching 190,000 and only just needed some remedial work doing (chain guides, chains, alternator and fuel pump.)

Can't complain Thumbs Up Bow down

I was in the same boat a couple of weeks ago. Low miles 3.6 or higher miles on a 4.4, I found 2 good ones and drove both. I took the 4.4, I admit it has 80k not 100k, but if just felt like a different car when setting off, plus the new layout inside Smile. Full service history up to 70k, so had engine, gear box and diff oils changed, just to be sure. If all stay well ish, I will not be going back to anything else.

At 8,000 miles a year I would look for a petrol SC.

If your only options are the 3.6 or 4.4 definitely the 4.4.
