After a bit more research , turns out the farmers hitch is the fitment i will need as the swan neck attachment is missing too ! Alot cheaper to buy but even easier to make , so ive bought some box section and will knock a couple up later

Be very careful - they (clearly) won't be VOSA approved, therefore will invalidate your insurance as well as making you leagally liable should the worst happen.

Also, the farmers hitch isn't made of box section - its solid Shocked and suitably heavy.

My mistake - I incorrectly assumed you'd bought the box section to use for the tow bar Rolling Eyes

Now that I know you'll be machining it out of a solid lump of steel, I'll stop being concerned Thumbs Up

Are you going with the older design of a smooth hole and a pin, or the later half threaded and a bolt ?

I had 3

Smooth hole and pin worked best for me, as I rarely used it and wanted quickly removable - and it didn't rattle too much IMHO

Smooth hole and bolt was quieter, but not perfect.

Half threaded and bolt was silent, but a PITA to remove.

Please could anyone give me information on the spec for the (later) type bolt fixing.
I have just tried to fit my "farmers" tow hitch (only 18 months on from buying it!!) and the fixing bolt I have is only 1/3rd threaded and locks up (runs out of thread) before it is fully home.
I guess that a standard bolt has been given to me whereas I need something special with more thread length.
I don`t want to use a fully threaded set screw because the shear load would then be on the threads which I can`t see is correct. Does anyone have a bolt to measure / picture. It looks like M16 with a 1.5mm thread pitch
Is it a special bolt? Available from?
Thanks for any help

Is it more than a couple of thick washers would take care of ?

I don't have mine any more, but the washers were on the chunky side -

I'm sure it will be fine, if a little rattly - I had one with just a pin for a while -

And whilst I'm posting photos, here's the threaded vs smooth -

Alistair,

That`s the bolt I`m after in your first picture - threaded half way down its length. The one I have is only threaded about 25 mm instead of 50 or so that I can see on that picture. It does have the hole for the security clip though.
Anyone have a UK source for that, please? Don`t drive faster than your Angel can fly.

Is your insert piece threaded - like my 3rd picture ?

It sounds like you have the bolt for the insert piece that was completely smooth all the way through (earlier design)

You may be able to source one from Dan, aother main dealer ? or PF Jones who are a Westfalia agent, or contact Westfalia themselves Thumbs Up

Alternatively put a wanted ad on the forum for the specific part - much more likely to get a hit than tagging on the end of another thread.

Thanks, Alistair - I will do a bit more searching,
The insert piece is threaded, yes

Added; After "a bit more searching" I needed to sit down - £30.00 !!! for an M16 bolt + delivery.
Local fastener stockist here I come Don`t drive faster than your Angel can fly.
