Extended Warranties

Our 2012 AB has had £2k spent on it this year in one repair with only 14k miles on it due to the EGR temperature sensor packing in. Normally it's not an issue but they ended up having to take the engine out and replace the exhaust manifold as they couldn't get the sensor out of it. There's currently a dispute with LR about this and they're supposed to be refunding some money but nothings materialised yet.

Anyway... This got us thinking about an extended warranty on the car. The guy at Team Valley Land Rover said the only warranty he would recommend is a Land Rover extended warranty.

I've dealt with Warranty Direct with another car and have had no cause for complaint from them, they've honoured what they said they would, and have paid out what they said they would.

I believe the LR warranty is about £1500 a year so 3 years would cost £4500 whereas Warranty Direct are offering cover for 3 years for a little over £2k.

I'm going to ask Warranty Direct and Land Rover for a list of covered components and check them against each other but I was just wondering what other peoples thoughts were with regards to extended warranties.

This car seems to have had a few issues, in 14k miles it's on it's 3rd starter motor which clicked when starting the other day and caused a failed start so I've got a suspicion it's going to need a 4th shortly.

Thanks!

Is Team Valley a main dealer ?

If so - I would substitute 'recommend' with 'sell'

I've no experience with Warranty Direct, but have heard good things - all you can really do is compare what's covered, any limits and any excess

This is something that you may choose to take into account in your deliberations:

The blue and especially the green lines on the graph are particularly interesting.

They're a LR Service Centre which means they only do servicing and repairs and don't have a fancy showroom to subsidise so their labour rates etc are a lot less then most main dealers. They're fully authorised by LR and can do anything that a normal dealers service dept/workshop can do.

That's an interesting post about Warranty Directs financials...

When my warranty expired I was so p'ed off with LR over their failure to honour the paintwork warranty as regards my rusty wheel arches (after two years) that I declined the offer of extension. While I do have oil weeps from both rear shocks and need the turbo drain mod, with oil also weeping from one turbo, I have not had to spend any money beyond routine servicing in 22 months, though no doubt saying so will produce a catalogue of expensive horrors at or before the next service/MOT. But I'm up by at least £2,500 just now. When my last car was in its worst 'money pit' phase I was spending about £3,000 a year, but that was exceptional, normally it was less, so if you can stand the risk of a major failure, then consider whether you might be better off doing without a warranty. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I wouldn't bother with warranty direct personally.

If no LR warranty on it at the moment, put some money aside every month to pay for any failures in the future.

And they've recently introduced chargeable inspections before they'll even agree to take a car on.

If I can keep it under 100,000 miles before it's 3 years old (which is looking unlikely), it'll be LR warranty (or nothing) for year 4. After that, I'll be on my own. Gulp!

If an LR warranty is in place it's transferable to a new owner and the car would not need to be inspected just because a new owner was added, for example in a private sale.

The LR warranty is expensive but is also very good (in our experience).

It could be a good selling point too, even if there was only a short period left on a warranty because if a prospective buyer detected something amiss during any inspection, the car could be rectified before expiry

In regard to warranties, do you need to have the LR extended warranty to continue to have the in control features ?, from reading the first 3 years are included with a new vehicle

Has anyone recently taken out LR extended warranty please? Just keen to understand the pricing structure. Does it vary by model? Does the price change each year or is it fixed for a period.

I’ve been down the non JLR warranty route before and probably won’t revisit.

Thanks! 2016 SDV8 AB

^ I can't answer to whether or not it varies between models; a phone call to any dealer will give you a price for yours.

We purchased our first extended warranty for our 42,000 miles, 2012 4.4 TDV8 L322 in December for the princely sum of £1600. That is a huge amount to spend annually IF no claims are made but in making the decision to purchase, we considered two (what we considered to be) important factors :-

1. there are many, many single faults that would cost at least that and several substantially more than the premium. For example, a search on here will give you the cost of replacing an alternator and a little research will show that rear suspension units cost almost that amount each.

2. the premium/purchase prices are set accordingly.

3. the premium includes 'MoT' insurance failures, I believe

4. the LR extended warranty covers a great deal more than the third party examples

In other words, if LR were confident that nothing go wrong or when something did it would an inexpensive repair, the premium would be considerably less than it is

There's an interesting post on warranties on the D3 forum: https://disco3.co.uk/forum/warrentywise-revues-170564.html

The LR Approved Used warranty has come in for some criticism because of its failure to cover "known issues" resulting in this: https://disco3.co.uk/forum/crankshaft-fail...65866.html 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate
