L405 Fixed Side Steps

Hi Guys,

Looking to purchase some fixed side steps to an L405 but is the only real option from Land rover?

I've seen genuine ones for £500/600 but replica ones for £200ish...is there a massive drop in quality with the cheaper non-genuine ones?

I've got the same issue at the moment; £662 for the "real thing" or as little at £175 ish for something with a near identical looking top, edge, under side and cast mounting brackets. The only thing that seem to be missing are the words "Range Rover" embossed in the top of the rubber and (oddly) fitting instructions, apparently!

There are some aftermarket ones of different designs, but the mounts are welded sheet steel (rather than cat) and they look very feeble. I'll avoid those!

So, what to do? And yes, I've searched back through every thread that I can find, but can't find an answer Sad

The genuine articles are pretty good and solid and I'd guess they'd last well. I'm sure that there will be good aftermarket steps too that'd do a good job but before I spent my money on them I'd want recommendation from other users.

Failing that it'd depend very much on how long I'd be keeping the car and how much use it would get. Thumbs Up

I have a set of genuine one's for sale, maybe the odd mark or two on the rubber but otherwise in good condition.

PM me if interested.

I bought the factory fixed side steps, fair bit more than the aftermarket ones but LR Dealer gave me a discount which helped a bit. Fitted them myself, took me quite a few hours though, also had to thread the holes under the car (some are pre-threaded for the bolts and some aren't apparently depending when your RR was built or something !). Steve

Have you had them for long? What has the quality of the OEM steps been like?

I fitted mine over 2yrs ago and still look fine. There was an advisory notice for factory fitted steps around that time aswell and so on next service, the main dealer carried out the check even though they knew were not factory (mind you, it was ensuring the mounting bolts hadn't come lose I think , but I had used thread lock on them all anyway). They are substantial , the box they come in is a very heavy lift for 1 person and I just managed to fit them in my RR by putting a cloth on the centre armrest to allow the box rest on it and clear the tail gate. I'm glad I went OEM in the end even with the price difference. Steve

Thanks, that’s good news Thumbs Up

I ordered a pair of LR original steps in the end, so I should be fitting them ASAP after delivery Very Happy They can’t be and more difficult than fitting them to the D4, can they?! Rolling Eyes

I have factory fit OEM and the quality is excellent. Why buy a £100k car and stick a non OEM accessory on it? It’s a Range Rover, not a Kia. Current MY2020

Stan, if they don't come with the detailed instructions, I shall follow your advice.

AMD, that was a good part of my logic in the end Thumbs Up

RM fully agree with the logic of buying the OEM. Have to say I'd have gone the next step too and had the dealer fit them too - maybe cost £100 to get them to do it (assuming you can't persuade them to do it free) and in the scheme of the purchase it's not a material sum. Maybe a tank of fuel Rolling with laughter

Then again I hate fettling and we are all different, you may enjoy fixing them yourself in which case fair play!

Not long now for you...

Unfortunately, for the dealer, I bought the steps elsewhere, so that might be a bit of a cheek Whistle

However, having seen the care that some dealers take over fitting side steps, I'm happy to have a go and do it myself, especially as I have access to a clean, drive in and close the door, space to work on it in Thumbs Up

Not long at all - it's just arrived at the dealer! Very Happy

Yes, negotiating a free fitting could prove challenging under the circumstances Laughing
