4.4 (339bhp) or 3.0 (258bhp) Diesel & Why?

Seem to be more 4.4's lingering on dealer forecourts.

These are the two engines available on the price of L405's been looking at (L322 is 4.4TDV8 and after a recent software update is lovely and smooth).

What was/ is the deciding factor on which of these engines is opted for?

Thanks.

Thumbs Up

I might get criticised for this comment but I drove three different TDV6's and all had an unacceptable turbo lag when accelerating. I had that on my RRS TDV8 and it drove me mad. The SDV8 pickup is almost instant.

Couldn't disagree more in my experience regarding the apparent turbo lag. I've owned both engines and both are great. The V8 is pretty quick and fairly economical but a little noisy when tootling around, the V6 is smoother and quick enough and more economical and feels more nimble. That said there's no doubt the V8 is the one for those who prefer to charge around everywhere but if you are coming from an L322 you'll find the V6 quicker than the old V8 and less than a second slower than the new V8.

You'll also get some who say that the electric bag of tricks make the V8 handle better but certainly not in my experience. I honestly believe LandRover had to put this on the V8 to cope with the extra 200+KG of extra front end weight.

For me the V6 is the all around best engine because I prefer to drive smoothly and progressively rather than white knuckle but if I were looking to purchase another FFRR I'd go for a car that was in the best condition, with the spec that suits you and whichever engine you get you'll be happy with because they are both really good.

I sometimes tow - so wanted the engine with the most torque - I'm very happy with the SDV8 Thumbs Up

Is the 4.4 the same engine as in the L322?

I chose the TDV6 due to it's lower weight, better economy & performance similar enough to make no real world difference so the cost saving & reduced running costs won me over.

I'll never be towing, so the extra torque wasn't needed & having lived with mine for 3 months now, i certainly don't feel the engine is at all lacking in the performance dept. & that the TDV6 suits the L405 perfectly. Paul

imo the problem is spending what £100k nearly on a Diesel, its getting worse so my vote would be the 5.0SC.

No help i know but the SDV8 really is lovely and without all this negativity against Diesel it would be my choice.

I'm with CaymanBlack .... I have the SDV8 which is great, I agree probably a bit rougher round the edges but has all the power ...

But the reason I have the SDV8 is I couldn't reach the budget required for the petrol .... if I was in that price bracket .... petrol all day long. Stephen Gazard

A drop on the ocean based on the new Bentayga Diesel which i'd assume will be around £160k & hitting £200k spec'd.

The Diesel engine in the FFRR really doesn't bother me as i find the S/C petrol ones a tad pointless in the same way a Diesel Ferrari or Lambo would be laughable.

The words Fast & FFRR really don't make much sense to me & the car suits the torquey diesels better whilst giving car like MPG. Paul

Why rough around the edges?

I agree with the general view that the 3.0 is probably smoother at idle etc than the V8 .... but it still sounds like a diesel ! Stephen Gazard

I noticed a big difference when test driving the 4.4 and 3.0
The 4.4 was a lot more responsive and felt a lot better to drive.

I have bought the 4.4 from new and couldn't be any happier Very Happy tremendous power when towing our heavy large caravan and has the legs to overtake with lots of power in reserve! 2010 defender utility
