Thump when pulling away

Just trying to get to the bottom of one of the noises the car makes to see if it's a problem or normal...

Here's the pattern: get in the car, shut the door and hear the deployable side steps closing. Start the engine and drive off. A few seconds after driving away there is a single thump sound which seems to come from right at the back of the car - it's not a dissimilar sound to the side steps but it's not the same. It's almost like it's something else folding away but I can't for the life of me think what it is.

Final resort - could it be the suspension coming out of access height?

Thanks for any thoughts & clues. 2016 SDV8 AB

I get the same - sometimes notice it, sometimes dont.

Think its something to do with the boot up proceedure - dont think its anything to worry about. Previous

When the car is locked and you open one door, check and see if both sides of the car has its steps down!

I have an issue where this happens only after the first go when the car has been locked. If it is unlocked the steps operate independently as they should.

Can you report on findings?

I have this. Sounds like it's from the left rear. I assumed it was diesel slap in the tank has been reported elsewhere on these cars. Does this sound like the same ? Only really hear on start up as I drive down the drive. 2013 L405 AB 4.4SDV8 Luxor/Ivory, 2007 Vogue TDV8 Epson Green/Sand, 2008 Vogue TDV8 Buckingham Blue/Sand, 2003 Vogue 4.4 LPG Epsom Green/Sage, 1998 Vogue SE 4.6 LPG Epsom Green/Cream

Had similar noise, like steps retracting.

I actually found out what it was - it was indeed the passenger step retracting. This is only when the car is set to single press total unlock.

All sorted now.

In my case it's definitely not the steps retracting. The steps take about a second to move whereas the sound I'm getting is a single, deep, muffled thump of a noise.

I've tried applying and releasing the EPB whilst in situ and it's definitely not that sound.

Oh well, I'll keep investigating! 2016 SDV8 AB

See if it does it even if you don't pull away.
I assumed it was the subwoofer powering up

Badger - great question.

The noise could well be the subwoofer. From memory it's fitted somewhere in the boot area so would be entirely consistent with where I notice this sound coming from. I have the reference audio, if relevant.

Will try and investigate further. 2016 SDV8 AB
