As title chaps. What I want to know is whether satellite co-ax cable can be used on a free view aerial.

Like a dope when we built the extension I cabled it all for satellite but now SWMBO wants free view. Can I just replace the dish with an aerial and change the connectors at the TV end?

not a tv engineer Dom but i've done loads of messing about with dishes and aerials and yes you can use sat coax as tv coax, if fact sat coax is slightly better screened so less signal loss on longer lengths.. ... - .- -.

Might me easier to buy a freesat box than put up an aerial ?

There are both freeview and freesat boxes available, they do basically the same thing, but with a different receiving device.

If your TV had built in freeview, then that may tip the balance for an aerial being the neater option though......

I have my free view aerial wired using satellite cable, never been a problem for the last 16 years.

+1 for the FREESAT box. It's just plug and play with your sky connections. Previously..

So, the TV in question actually has on board Freeview and a satellite decoder (not Freesat). It's the kitchen one which also goes with us in the caravan (Avtex 24" thing which will run on 12 volts)

The on board satellite is fairly rubbish, the planner never works and channels are limited depending on which satellite the dish is pointed at, normally Astra 2E. But the freeview is a lot better as we found out a couple of weeks back in the caravan.

Then we have 4 other TVs in the house, all Samsung. 2 have on board sat, all 4 have Freeview. So, I reckoned on replacing the satellite dish with a mahoosive aerial which can feed 5 tellys. Does that sound feasible?

Yes, feasible. I used to wire up systems like that, using passive splitters. Do not use those cack y piece splitters, they were ok in the 1980's ! Your TVs will probably at different ends of the house , migyt be easier fitting 2 separate aerials.

Yes, there is already an aerial on one end of the house which would do the 2 upstairs TVs and teh wiring could go through the loft without issue.

It's the downstairs ones where I can't run wiring without damaging the new plaster work, hence why I wanted to use satellite cable. And the dish is at the other end of the house although the pole would accommodate an aerial as well as the dish.

Passive splitters??? Would something like this be OK?

the cable will all be fine, we use the same cable for sat and TV when wiring up new houses and it works well.

can you get the cable into the loft form the sat dish? the only reason I ask is if you have one aerial and its working well then the best cause of action would be to being all the tv feeds and the aerial feed to one point in the loft and add a freeview compatible amplifier, fed from the aerial distributing to all the individual TVs. Much better than splitting the cables.

If you have good signal you may get away with splitting it, but if you can get all the ends to the same place, and have a power feed to a light or something in you loft then youre golden.

if the cable form the sat is not long enough, you can link in another section by using the sat fplugs and a straight connector. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

As others have said, sat cable is better, so can use for Freeview. You can't go the other way, though.
