What causes this on a not very old car? I've never replaced a brake line, even on 50 year old cars. Ron B. VK2OTC

Probably the salt they put down on our roads.

Mine (2012) had corrosion on rear brake pipes at last MOT, treated with waxoyl, but with road salt and off road muck I expect they will need to be replaced before too long. My last 322 needed pipe replacement after about 7 years I think, so the current one is worse. Only Range Rovers since 1988 |

Just as an aside.... Are the OEM brake pipes made of steel? The reason I ask is that I heard somewhere that in the US they insist on steel brake pipes on any car with ABS braking systems as the pulsating pressure when ABS is activated can cause case hardening of Cunifer pipes.

I believe they are steel yes. I think that some countries ban copper brake lines due to the possibilities of it hardening and splitting causing issues and failure. Not sure if its actually true though! I did mine in kunifer using joe90's excellent guide and cant see them having issues ever again. |

yep are definitely steel, and cheap as genuine replacements, the money is in the labour. to get them in and out!

CuNifer is a copper nickel alloy I think so does this also suffer from case hardening as this is my favoured brake pipe material? 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE
