50 CAN bus error

Have had my 2004 4.4 petrol in to garage and managed to clear all previous faults except for 50 CAN BUS which is stopping the HDC/ABS/EAS from re-setting. Can't put my new alloys/tyres on as can't lock suspension to raise car.

Anyone got any thoughts on the cause? It is obviously electrical as when the ignition died for a day or two last week, sparks flew from the Neg pole on Battery when failing to start, indicating a short of some sort. Thought I had cured it with insulating tape around the neg wire.

THe three things I can think of causing the CAN BUS failure to re-set are:

1. ABS cable to sensor on left being worn/bare from rubbing
2. ABS module shorting or bad connection. Have checked the pins/connector - it is clear of corrosion adn sprayed electrolux oil onto connector. Could it be within the main ABS module housing (see http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic2582.h...abs+module )
3. Short circuit to +ve. There is apparently a fuse or connector close to the battery pole end of the Pos wire? Sporadic Fault?

Anyone any other thoughts? THe automotive sparky has had a go adn can't get it to clear either. Sad

I thought you can't raise the car on an all point lift/hoist without first putting it into off-road mode in order to stop it throwing a fault?

Can I change each individual wheel then on the ordinary jack without altering the height?

Ps when I switch off and get out of the car, the EAS injects a bit of air into each strut and raises the car slightly. Is that normal or the sign of stg wrong? My TD6 doesn't do it!

You can jack it up and change individual wheels without locking the suspension... I do it all the time, when you restart the engine the suspension will level itself...

No Stan, was getting my new discs and brakes put on my TD6 and asked if they wouldn't mind swapping the V8 wheels for a consideration. But they have a hoist which should make it quicker adn simpler. sadly not to be so it's a couple of hours grunting adn strianing this weekend.

Still no solution to the 50 CAN bus error. Sad

Car drives lovely though! Smile

Something crossed my mind when I read your last post.
I think it's possible you may have a bad connection on your -ve battery terminal.
I would be inclined to remove the earth cable from the battery post, clean the post with emery to shiny metal, the same with the inside of the earth cable clamp, coat the post and the inside of the clamp with vaseline and re-assemble.
May not solve your problem but it won't do any harm.
Also could do the same to where the earth cable bolts to the body.
Your car is getting to an age when it pays to clean all the earth points you come across, removing any surface corrosion on the contact surfaces.
Can definitely stop problems arising.

Did you ever fix this? Did it flash up air suspension inactive sometimes?

Dan, the prob was the neg pole and connecting wire not being tight enough fit - so a bump could lose you power momentarily. All good since tightening up the battery connections. (Think that was the cause but it was 5 years ago!)

Thumbs Up
