Burning smell from coolant tank area TDV8

So it would seem my alternator might be on it's way out, just started whining today, and almost like a burning clutch smell. How long before they generally go kaput from here? Funds tight as I've just bought another motor. Is it a massive job?

The brakes are needing an extra shove too , don't seem as sharp as they should. Would the alternator affect this?

Imminent - assuming you mean you can smell it whilst the engine is off.

If you can smell burning, then the diodes are failing, so your battery is driving your alternator like a motor - so what happens next is that you destroy your battery as well......

^^

what he said,

in terms of it being a big job, its a bit of a pig, but you can get a DENSO alternator from ECP or car parts4less for about £230 and a lucas for about 200 from memory....

if you are reasonably weildy with spanners its doable or for this, most garages can have a go. its not a RR specific 4x4 mega job.

get them to give you a price and then stick to it.....

might be worth getting LR to give you a labour only price as they will book rate it and if i remember its not down for many hours worth of work (worth a punt)

Left it parked up yesterday, cue absolutely zero power today, can't even unlock Big Cry Big Cry

Disconnect the battery & get it charged as soon as you can otherwise it will drain every last ounce from it.

But don't reconnect until the alternator is replaced
