Hit and runs - my opinion is that more and more people are on the phone when driving and don't want to be prosecuted for a driving offence as Police can now ask for mobile phone records if the accident is serious enough.

Looking at this particulate car, it's an old style XJ with quite a nice numberplate so I'm assuming it will be an old guy who doesn't have spatial awareness which is all too common these days. I'm sure if you can get his details or get the police to contact him he will admit liability as he will be mortified when something pops through his letterbox.

The other thing you could do if it's a supermarket is go back next week at the same time and wait. People are creatures of habit so I'm sure he will be back and he probably won't have repaired his car as he will not want to claim in his insurance.

Ask the security manager at the supermarket if he or she can look back and pick out his car and if they can ask them to run it on to a disc for safe keeping. They probably won't let you have a copy but most cctv footage only stays on the recorder for 30 days or so therefore it's better to have this taken off now in case its needed later on.

I'm sure you will be ok but you do need to take some bold steps now otherwise you will never get anywhere. 2009 Vogue TDV8 Nara Bronze

Was there much damage? Looked like it took a fair old whack given the amount it rocked....hopefully you get it sorted quick with the footage. Another good reason for dash cams

that's the reason I'll never park on a busy carpark as this is too frequent in a large car, luckily i have a badge but when no spaces ill leave or go back later or park furthest away on my own or straddle the line so no car can get close, most are private so you don't have to pay tickets _____________________________________________________

My kids now think it's a laugh when I go to the supermarket and have to find a "Range Rover" space......a double space so I can park in the middle and as far from the supermarket I can get so it's quieter. Whistle Whistle

I've seen or heard about too many incidents in small car parks to trust other people's parking and "dishonesty". If they think they can get away with it they will certainly try. Mad 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

People don't like Range Rover owners I've decided...parking across lines makes it worse and in my opinion encourages people to take a key to the side as it gets people's back up.

Usually I take the Smart car to Tesco and if people whack the doors, they're plastic so don't get damaged.

Life is cruel. 2009 Vogue TDV8 Nara Bronze

Just a thought - where does the law stand re hit n runs in publicly accessed privately owned car parks (supermarkets etc) where they usually have plenty of signs basically saying 'park at your own risk'..... QUID FACIUM TIBI

It'll be a civil matter, I very much doubt that the Police will want to get involved as it was A, off the Public Highway and B, no one was injured..... And while we would consider it as a malicious act of vandalism... a court would most likely view it as bad driving Evil or Very Mad ..... That is unless you know the Blind Censored twit in the Jag.. then it could be a deliberate act......

I did know a chap who used to take his up armored Humber Pig shopping... we used to think he was nuts... but maybe there was some method in his madness Rolling with laughter Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

The law is an ass if thats the case. Does this mean I could drive around a supermarket car park, peed'ed out of my skull but be immune from prosecution because it is classed as a private place ?

Short answer is no you won't be exempt:
"S192[1] RTA 1988 the road must be one to which the public have access. Whether or not the public have access to a road is a question of fact. If a member of the public has to over come some form of physical barrier or act in defiance of a prohibition then that will not be considered a road to which the public have access - Cox v White [1976] RTR 248

A sign on a private road which stated that 'Trespassers will be prosecuted' was held to be a sufficient prohibition to members of the public to exclude the location from S192 1988 - R v Beaumont [1964] Crim LR 665

A car park is not a road - Clarke v Kato [1998] 1 WLR 1647. However, it is a public place within S192 and so otherwise included.
Public Place

A location is a public place if people gain access to it in their capacity as members of the public rather than as a person with some form of permission to enter.

Multi storey car parks, hospital car parks and pub car parks during licensing hours have been held to be public places. A pub car park may only be a public place after licensing hours if the public, in fact, do use the car park at that time." John
