TDV8 Fuel Gauge fault

So just coming home from work the fuel gauge went from half a tank to empty and a yellow light, then sprung back into action and was on and off for the bulk of the journey. As I left the motorway it went to empty and has stayed there. Got on drive and turned off for 5 mins...went out and it's OK now Neutral

Any ideas? Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

in tank sender Thumbs Up

one is not reading right. there are 2 but together on one unit, and the cluster takes an average, if one is duff it throws it toys out of the pram and goes to 0. mine did it on my old 3.6, did it once then was OK for ages then i brimmed it one time and it was Censored from then on and i got it changed.

you can buy the float levels separately but they aren't cheap at about £90 each and the same labour as actually having the whole thing out. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mine does it intermittently, reading falls to approximately half of what it was. As a "belt and braces" I zero the trip when I fill up and get more fuel after about 350 miles (5L Petrol) I assume that whatever the gauge says if there is fuel in the tank the engine keeps going. It hasn't done it for a while and often clears itself, I am pretty sure there is a Tech Bulletin on it and how to fix it --- I was told it might not be the senders but the wiring Very Happy Geoff

could be the connections in the tank, mine was fixed after changing the senders. I think that its more likely to be part of the rheostat wears out and fails in the range where the fuel level is normaly kept. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mine did this for about two months then gradually got better, I was going to replace it but never got round to it

Has now been fine for 6+ months (which pretty much guarantees it will break the evening on my drive home from work!) 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

I am heading to southern france in 2 weeks with the tintent and 4 bikes and a tonne of usual stuff. Wifey has driven it this morning and says the needle went to half tank and stayed there Rolling Eyes she also spoke to our mechanic and he says that the tank needs to come out to replace the sender unit(s). Not a huge job but no good with a full tank. He did say say sometimes they develop a wiring fault so he will take a quick look at the electrics too.

Obviously needs sorting but with just 2 weeks to a main holiday do I really want to tempt fate..... Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

I like the sound of 'fix'.....it sounds much more accomodating than 'repair'....you dont recall which one Adam do you ?

This has just happened on my MY10 TDV8 - feels oddly even worse when its a TFT screen that's telling you..

is this a main stealer job or something my local place (not a specialist but does some work on friends RR) could do?
