Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve Hissing

First of three posts tonight after some long overdue work in the engine bay this weekend before it rained (yes it does rain here in the desert).

For a couple of weeks now I have been having a funny hissing noise from startup when pulling away for about 5 mins into my journey. A quick inspection led me to the PCV valve which if I applied some pressure to the top of it, stopped the hissing.

This weekend I thought I would have it off and see whats what with it so I can try and fix the hissing. The unit looks like one piece, and its probably 10 years old (like the rest of car) looking at the state of it before I cleaned it up. Its doesn't look like it breaks down any further without damaging the lid area so I didn't pursue a full teardown of it. Just cleaned it up and re-installed it. Hose looks good also, no oil inside it either. Still hissing, so a good cleanup didn't fix it.

Do these things regularly need replacing? or does anyone have any experience of an underlying issue with the hissing. Car appears to be running fine, just want to fix the annoying noise in the mornings.
