Battery Voltage

Wonder if anyone can advise....

2012 V8 Diesel Westminster - when I check the voltage I get 14.1v - 14.3v with the engine running which is good (I think), but 12.0v - 12.2v with ignition on - seems a bit low?

Should I replace the battery given the fact it's 4.5 years old?

Cheers,
James.

Sounds a bit low however you wil have lots of electonics /pumps/fans and all sorts on with the ignition. Best off trying with the key out -Lift the bonnet wait 20 mins and try again - let us know what the figure is.

cheers

Simon

That's what mine does, I know it's older than yours but that shouldn't make much difference as RP123 said there is a lot running with the ignition on...

If your worried, take it to a garage and ask them to do a drop test on it... Thumbs Up Pete

I use a volt meter I plug into the power socket.
It shows 14.6 to 14.8 usually when driving.
12 .0 to 12.2 volts with the ignition on is about the same.
My battery is also 5 years old.
I asked this question on a different thread.
And the answer suggested that as AGMS get old they may suddenly fail.
So I am thinking of replacing mine even though there is nothing currently wrong.

I had one of those plug in voltmeters that consistently read 0.3V low when compared to a decent calibrated voltmeter.
Either the same is happening to you and your voltage is actually 12.5V, not too bad but could be better, or your battery is showing signs of of it's age and is not holding a full charge.
At 4.5 years old I would have no hesitation in replacing it, FFRR's are Censored difficult to push start.
Bear in mind battery voltage also drops as temperature falls which doesn't help matters.

sounds a bit low as said but i would test it at the terminals with the car off to get a standing voltage, the voltage running sounds about right though so your alternator is good Thumbs Up

As they are AGM batteries i would be careful what you replace it with as the car is coded to AGM and the charging system is optimised for them. I read somewhere that when you replace them you need to tell the car that you have too, for some reason....... will try and find the thread......... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks everyone for your help, suggestions and comments Thumbs Up I think on balance it may be best to change the battery - it was around 4.5 - 5 years that the battery went on my previous D3 and with winter almost upon us I don't want to be caught out.

Also learnt something - I didn't realise the 2012 FFRR used an AGM battery - I thought it was just the cars with the automatic start/stop Bow down

Cheers again.

New AGM into MY2010 onwards

Is a dealer job I am informed.

Something to do with the intelligent battery sensors .....
If a new battery is installed the system might overcharge it cos it thinks the battery is old and knackered....
