Sounds a bit low however you wil have lots of electonics /pumps/fans and all sorts on with the ignition. Best off trying with the key out -Lift the bonnet wait 20 mins and try again - let us know what the figure is.

That's what mine does, I know it's older than yours but that shouldn't make much difference as RP123 said there is a lot running with the ignition on...

I had one of those plug in voltmeters that consistently read 0.3V low when compared to a decent calibrated voltmeter.

sounds a bit low as said but i would test it at the terminals with the car off to get a standing voltage, the voltage running sounds about right though so your alternator is good

Thanks everyone for your help, suggestions and comments I think on balance it may be best to change the battery - it was around 4.5 - 5 years that the battery went on my previous D3 and with winter almost upon us I don't want to be caught out.
