2 stroke oil in a V8

Don't shoot the messenger....

I came across an 'old school' diesel mechanic this weekend whilst watching a few historic rally cars. A conversation of diesel's in a host of 4wd's started with a few lads. This chap, who claimed to have worked on Toyota and Isuzu diesels for 25 years said....wait for this..."if it's running not quite smooth enough put about 200ml of 2 stroke oil in with the diesel every now and then"...

A you know, I'm not a tech and have no intention of doing this but in what way could 2 stroke possibly aid a diesel and make it smoother ??

Puzzled....2 stroke in my shed is for the Stihl Mr. Green Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

IMHO - a bit like the old frying oil - OK for an old defender, but I won't be trying it in my modern SDV8.......

Me either....and to be fair the lads he was talking too were running Hilux/Isuzu Troopers etc and he seemed genuine...BUT when something just doesn't sound right Thumbs Up Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

I seem to remember a thread on the D3 forum about this ages ago and think it was pretty split as to whether there was actually any benefit in doing this, although it wouldn't necessarily do any harm.

HOWEVER, this was for 2.7 TDV6, not 4.4 V8 Exclamation

I think the 2 micron fuel filter would take out the oil and probably block. I had a 2 micron filter on the Isuzu 110. I refuelled the 110 with a 20lt jerry that I previously used for waste engine oil storage. Within a few km the car came to a stop as filter blocked with the residue oil that was in the Jerry. I was very surprised as the Jerry full of fuel had been bouncing around for a week on corrugated roads. ______________________________

Here we go, this subject has caused more comment, and friction, (yes pun WAS intended) on other forums than any other subject.

The use of 2SO in diesels has been the subject of the longest thread on Freel2 and a fairly long one on Disco3. Both worth a read if you have a day or so to spare just for the entertainment value if nothing else. The percieved benefits are laid out in loads of posts by people who strongly believe in those benefits and put forward their experiences, and in some cases post evidence after engibne strip downs. The negative side is not really put forward very well and consists of "snake-oil" type comments but no evidence. There is the odd piece written by authors heavily involved in the petroleum and oil industry,who may be seen to have an interest.

It divides opinion like nothing else and I for one would not try to convince anybody to use it, but loads do and amazingly there is not one single piece of evidence in all the posts that shows any damage to any part of the engine. Therefore, I don't see why a V8 would be any different. One of the claims is its cleaning ability and users have stripped down EGRs and found them free of carbon. MAPs are also shown looking new after 50K miles with no sludge in sight.

As for blocking filters, 2SO is very much like diesel so I would not think that is an issue and the filters on a D3/4 are no different to a V8 in what they do. Also it is intended to pass through filters and be burnt in an engine producing very low ash.

There was a lovely post by a guy who decided to try it so he put in the 2SO then filled the tank and drove off only to stop dead half a mile down the road. He was on his Iphone immediately posting "DON'T DO IT, IT's Censored MY ENGINE." The RAC drained his tank of petrol and all was well. It seems the little bit of exra lubrication saved his HP pump.

Give it a read guys, it's better than most thrillers.

I ran a few cars on it, for quite a lot of miles

First was a Fabia vRS. Rather smokey, VAG dealers tell you specifically NOT to use anything other than approved additives Rolling Eyes
250ml of 2 stroke oil to a 40ltr tank. Initial improvements were minimal, but after 3-4 tanks, the smog had all but cleared up, MPG had gone up by approx 3mpg, and engine ran much, much smoother.
Done over 45k miles in that car without issue

Next was a Fiesta 1.4TDCi, company van. Had a horrible hesitation on partial throttle and when cruising. Again, after a few tanks of 2 stroke, the hesitation cleared up, and MPG had increased again. Never noticed it running any smoother, but then it did have 140k miles on it when I got the keys, and it had another 60-70k of HARD miles afterwards

Also used it in the D3. No improvement in fuel economy, but then it is a small house in terms of aero. But much smoother running when cold, and reduced injector clatter at all times

Finally, the wifes FL2 gets a dose when I remember. Doesn't start as smooth as one would expect. A few tanks of 2 stroke, and it starts quicker, easier and smoother. And returns nearly 45mpg, where before it would struggle to crack 40

Never used it my TDV8 (but might try a couple of tanks) but pre-mix my petrol Mazda RX8 all the time - generally rocemmended by the owners club to help lubricate the rotor tips (mines a 1 owner PZ limited edition on a 56 plate with only 22k miles on the clock, absolutely immaculate having been garaged all its life and only used as a weekend car when dry!)

 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

When ever I have a diesel I normally use a drop of 2so in the tanks, freelander 1 made it quiter almost straight away, had pajero running 50% derv + 50% cooking oil with a drop of 2so (I use the green stuff from wilko) ran well for as long as I had it

Have done a couple of tanks with 2SO and one injector that was real close to throwing a fault code (injector balance 1.30) have normalized close to 1.0.

I believe the addition of 2SO also was a part of the VW emission scam... "Plentraktoren/Garden tractor": 2008 L322 TDV8

Australia 2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Bournville

I used it for a while in my TD5 D2. Whilst the engine was quieter on light throttle at low revs, its torque was reduced at that time. I have a small hill on my driveway which provided a consistent daily test and with 2SO the engine struggled to maintain pace. I concluded that the quieter running was probably due to delayed combustion.
