Driving to Austria - any tips?

Will be heading off to St anton in Austria at some point for more snow fun. Anyone done this route before? Best route to take? best overnight stops en route (place/hotel?)

PS having a hard time getting hold of any winter tyres in 255/60/R18. (vredesteins or Nokian are my choice but i will take any other advice)

Have driven across to Sonthofen and Wertach (Bavaria - not a million miles from where you're heading), and also Neustift (Austria - just south of Innsbruck). Both areas have decent skiing!

As for driving over, I've never stopped: always been part of a group so swapped drivers and pushed through the night... there in time for brunch! Always a quiet drive as a result too.

Sat Nav is generally fine (providing you allow toll roads) and have always headed in the followng direction with or without Satnav: Calais/Eurotunnel > Oostend > Bruges > Leuven > Aachen > Bonn > Mainz > Worms > Karlsruhe > Pforzheim > Stuttgart > Ulm > Kempten and onwards. On the return, Stuttgart way is a Censored around rush hour btw...

Hope this helps - and have fun! Thumbs Up

Hello, Achen-Bonn-Ulm etc etc is a great way. Use it most years when going to the Dolomites. Have stayed at Holiday Inn just outside of Heidelberg (Hockenheim). also stayed in Memmingen. Remember Sonthofen from when i was in the mob [a long time ago]. Watch out for the Brussel ring during rush hour. Have a good trip.

td6, cor it was a long time agao but i think it was 'pension herb' or something like that. Very nice after along drive, good beer, food and comfy bed. Breakfast was the usual continental fair, cheeses meats etc etc. It wasn't booked in advance just that the Fern Pass was closed evern for RR Classics.

If I were you I'd get them changed on the way if you can't find in the UK. UK seems in very short supply at the moment and prices are going up, but that's not the case in Germany. PM me if you need a hand booking in somewhere.

http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?deta...sowigan=Wi These Vredestein's are 273 chf which is about £178.

Have fun in St. Anton. Been there a couple of times and it's a nice place.

Always worked well as a route down...

Also: don't forget your vignette when you cross the border mate (but you probably knew that anyway).
