Discovery 3 Vs Range Rover

Hello Gents,

I'm a member of Disco3.co.uk and I'm looking at FFRR's hence the vist.

I have owned three D3's now. The first was 4.4 HSE LPG which I loved but sold. Sad

The next two was both TDV6's which I also liked very much. Smile

I'm now looking at FFRR's, preferably a TDV8 2007 onwards.

The only RR I have driven was my husbands 2002 4.4 Vogue which was quite nice but didn't drive as well as a D3.

My questions is.......

When did the Range Rover become a better driver than the D3? Was there a certain year that the RR was totally re engineered?

Clarkson rates the RR as the best car money can buy. Which year RR was he reffering too?

Sorry for all the questions.

Clarabella

2002 was when the L322 was launched, so this current shape has always been a better drive than the D3 as the D3 was launched in 04. There have been a few changes along the way, to engine and interior.

The RR is much more refined than the D3, or most other cars on the road.

You get a lot of car for your money when you buy a used RR, but the TDv8's hold their money well.

Hope this answers some of your questions.

When looking for my FF I test drove both the TDV6 and the petrol Discovery 3.
Neither in my opinion came close to the on road performance and refinement of the Range Rover.
The interior was also a far cry from where I sit now.
The most important opinion though is yours not mine.
It'll be you using the car. 15MY SDV8 Vogue SE

Clarkeson bought a 2007 Vogue SE with the TDV8 engine I believe.

I could be biased, as I traded up from a Td6 to a TDV8, but it does suit the vehicle much better and give a more refined, smoother and responsive drive.

Td6 is a good engine, but it's more for those with a relaxed driving style. A bit like the Disco 2.7 version of the TDV6 was.

In terms of the ride, they introduced terrain response on the FFRR in 2007. So this is when it got a dedicated road setting like the D3/D4 have, with setting for different conditions. Before that it had a one-suspension setting-fits-all like most earlier Land Rovers had. I noticed the 2008 is better on the corners than the 2006 I had before. But again, Td6 is still fine for relaxed drivers. It's not a sports car anyway.

If your used to the D3 and terrain response and touch screen Nav etc I would go for a 2007+ model and the TDV8 is a very refined vehicle indeed. I had a D3 Metrepolis LE (top of range) for three years and I can assure you the FRRR TDV8 is a much much better car - in a different class altogether in fact. Thumbs Up

All TR does is select the settings automatically that one would normally select manually.

IE rocks = low ratio, high suspension and disable DSC. I don't think TR has any extra settings that cant be selected manually with a pre-TR vehicle?

I believe the 2010 is completely different with its adaptive dynamic adjustable shocks...

HI Clarabella, welcome.

I actually have both cars that you mention, infact I have the FFRR, my wife the D3, and both are great cars, however, without repeating what some of the other posters have already said, in my opinion the FFRR is a far more refined and luxurious car. The D3 feels very utilitarian in comparisson, and we have the supposedly top spec HSE model. I do like the versatility of the 7 seats and the fact that all seats can be layed down completely flat to make a massive load area in the D3. Besides that, I'd have the FFRR anyday, but fortunately we have both anyway. Must be a 2007MY onwards for best FFRR - IMHO

Best of luck... Smile
