Steering column fix....

Don't you just love it when some Censored has been there before..... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

My column hasn't moved since I got it, not really an issue as me and my good lady both like the column in the same position... anyway as it's getting long in the tooth the steering lock is getting more and more temperamental and sometimes takes numerous goes to get it to disengage, you can hear it trying to move but the noise is strained and laboured and not a lot happens...

I picked up another faulty naked steering column and set to stripping it to see how they work, with a view to fix all the faults, the info from stripping it and the small amount of info I found on the net means I'm pretty sure I can fix it...

So, while the FF is off the road having the bumpers sorted I thought I'd give it a go, it is possible to get the column out without removing the dash pad but not when some Censored Censored has been in there and totally knackered one of the bolts that hold it on... it's just possible to get a socket on an extension with a wobbly drive to the bolt when it's OK, no way am I getting anything on this one... so, makes the job a bit longer as the dash pad will have to come out...

Then I notice why it didn't work, the column ECU is missing and so is the motor for the in/out adjustment...!!!

So, has anyone got a motor and ECU going spare.... broken motor is fine, it's the gearbox and drive shaft I really need...??

Hopefully get this sorted and I'll do a writeup on how to refurb these columns for a pittance (if the information and suppliers of bits hold up their end)

Happy to pay for any broken bits and P+P etc...

Thanks... Pete

I was told or maybe Im mistaken that the steering column ECU is essential for the ignition and steering lock to talk to each other and release both key and steering lock?

So what does steering ECU actually do?

Steering column ECU just controls the motors... it's only on the Vogue, controls the easy entry feature and the link with the seat memory...

Ignition etc is controlled by the immobiliser and the BECM...

Thumbs Up Pete

Ah! Thank you for that, guess I got it too since its a vogue as well. I've put it as up as it can go and then just a mm down as in not to overtighten the nut and have it jam as I read these are the main cause of there motors failing and now it doesn't move like before when I switch on and off the car, one less thing to worry about in a sea of unresolved issues. But I do occasionally check to see if its still working, like you check to see if a sleeping person is still breathing or has passed away during the night!!!

Because all the cars I test drove before buying this, it was the only one to have both the steering motors working!
