United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Stornoway Grey

I have been very busy in the background. I found out yesterday that my Range Rover was a special order through H R Owen where they no longer sell Land Rovers, but was for an exclusive customer who bought it for a Christmas present and had H R Owen deliver it Christmas Eve in 2002.

I decided to a lot more research and wrote letters to all previous owners who I could find names and addresses for and contacted the garages who have worked on the Range Rover from new as I want to know as much as I possibly can.

Moving on to the more important update, I got the results of the initial inspection of my gearbox through yesterday in the late afternoon. The oil was thin and very dark. So absolutely no chance that it was changed less than 200 miles ago! But I have authorised the garage to replace the shift solenoid as well as clean the filter and put fresh oil in it and won't get the car back until Monday afternoon. The good thing is, no metal filings or nasty stuff was found in the oil. Fingers crossed that I may have gotten off lightly with this repair.

I am really missing my Range Rover now. And to add insult to injury, the parts that I bought for it have turned up. LED reverse lights, clear wing indicators etc...

I also misread the date of the last service thinking it was January this year, but it was actually January of 2015. So it is getting a service next week once the car is back.

When you say there is crap in the engine, what is it?? My experience is these engines have always looked spanking on the inside with a nice gold look of oil. Do you think it has had some cheap oil in it??

When an engine like a V8 isn't serviced regularly and does a lot of miles, black sludge builds up. The last oil change was done at a cheapo garage, so probably did have cheap oil put in it although the service and MOT bill was over £300.

Either way, I am getting it done asap after I get it back. Then it will be sorted and then I am penniless for a few months as every penny I could lay my hands on has been sunk into this motor lol.

Yet I can't stop smiling every time I see it or a picture of it. I must be nuts.

My latest purchase. The seller wouldn't let me have the wing vents on their own, so had to buy a grill and wing vent kit as a set. The grill won't fit my car as it is for the 2010 onwards model, so I will be putting it for sale to recover some of the purchase price.

Payed a visit this afternoon to the gearbox specialist, and as I now have no way of getting to him, he is going to deliver my car back to me if I give him a lift once he is finished. I am not sure if I left enough fuel in it for him to test drive it and come back to me as well as me drop him back Shocked Fingers crossed as I do need to put more fuel in it later anyway.

There is a small possibility that the oil has possibly been changed in the last year but not a complete change, only about 5 litres at the most that has then gone round the system and picked up all the crap.

Either way the solenoid is being changed and the oil has been changed along with the filter being cleaned.

Fingers crossed that this solves it. If not, then I will limp it locally until I get the money together to get a replacement gearbox sorted.

Next job will be to run it up to the local lorry yard and pay for the underneath to be properly washed.

I wonder how they cleaned the filter, it's a sealed paper element inside a plastic housing...

When you change the oil you only get about 1/2 of it out, to change it all you need a power flush...

How can new oil get to places and pick up bits that the old oil couldn't..??

and if they did change the filter, make sure they used an OE one and not a cheapie...

Thumbs Up Pete

I thought it was a metal filter on the v8 gearboxes. Either way, if it was metal he was going to clean it and if it was paper he was going to replace it.

I have the car back now and so far have covered about 20 miles, 7 of those with the mechanic in the car as I gave him a lift back, I put my foot down to nip out of a junction with the mechanic in the car, and it banged into gear 3 times, and a minor barely noticeable judder, but no limp mode so far. After I dropped him off I was much gentler with the car and I am going to assume that the oil is still working its way around properly but it drove home beautifully.

Can't wait to drive it again.

Don't hold your breath, takes seconds to distribute it where it needs to go, you may get some more time out of it though, I nursed mine for around a year with violent changes, you learn to back off just as it's going to change and then gently pick the drive up.... Thumbs Up Pete

Since I got the Range Rover back I have not been well enough to drive Rolling Eyes So it has just sat parked up. I am using it tomorrow though. But my other half went out and got some photo's for me.

Not all the new pipes are visible and 1 picture shows the intake pipe that has been bodged by the previous owner.

The wing grills arrived yesterday as well, so this Saturday I will be fitting the LED reverse bulbs, the new D2S headlight bulbs, the wing vents and the clear wing indicators. And if the weather is good enough, the car will get a polish outside and a clean inside as I am going away on the 1st October to do the London 2 Brighton run. If things go to plan, I will be driving my other Range Rover for that event and my Mum will be driving this one. Which makes me extremely nervous as she hasn't driven anything this big and powerful.

Also this coming week this Range Rover is having a major service with the engine system flushed and stuff put in to help protect against carbon build up. And the other Range Rover is having a repair done to its coolant system. So it is now all go. And if we can't find a hotel with 2 disabled rooms near the start line, both Range Rovers will become our bedrooms. And I know my Mum will be sleeping in this one. I am really excited about the event though. Plus I really need a break away from home life right now.

Less than 35 miles and the gearbox went into trans fail safe mode, limped it back to the garage that did the gearbox repair who plugged the reader in and it came back up with shift solenoid B again which is brand new and was replaced last week.

It has been suggested that there might be an air lock but looking more likely that it is going to need the gearbox being refurbished or replaced.

So I now have a pretty road ornament for a little while. Big Cry

Then to make things worse, after stopping at that garage the car decided to display trans overheat message, so getting home in the 7 miles it was took over an hour as I had to keep stopping and letting the gearbox cool down.

I am GUTTED as I was hoping to take this to the London 2 Brighton run, but that is now not an option.

I am going to be getting it fixed though. Just not straight away.
