Lower glove box issue

Had this for a while now but since I've been travelling all over, I haven't bothered investigating any futher.

Problem started when I removed the lower glovebox to do some work on cabling my dash mounted Garmin say nav. All was well until I plugged the cables back in and I got that pungent "burning silicon chip" smell, accompanied by smoke coming out of the glovebox switch.

Having check all 2 connections to the glovebox all looked OK, but I suspected the switch was dead, as I could still open the upper but not the lower. I found a replacement switch on flea bay, but when I plugged it in, it did exactly the same thing!

Now, I know I might have plugged the cables into the wrong place on the glovebox but the connectors are so different that I think that's pretty much impossible, so I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what else could be the problem?

I've read that the switch itself is susceptible to blowing but I'm loath to buy another one and find it does the same thing.

Oh and now that the glove box is closed, how the hell do you get it open without the switch?

Alan, not had this myself but I did go through te indignity of being unable to open the lower glovebox. (flat battery) If you want a laugh actually, read here http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic2588.html?highlight=let

OK, if the switch is burning out it can only be due to excessive current flowing through it and burning the contacts or electronics. I would check out how much current the circuit is drawing with a multimeter. Just wire it into the circuit in place of the switch. Amps must be measured "in circuit", not across it.

It could be something as simple as the mechanism to open it is jammed so when the solenoid fires to release the glovebox it can't actually move, draws a large current and burns out the switch. That would be my first check anyway. Not that LR would design something that badly anyway, but I'll bet the fuse for the circuit is in the fusebox behind that glovebox.

As for opening it, I watched the AA guy get brutal.

Cheers for that, I did wonder about the opening mechanism taking too much current but it "blows" as soon as I turn on the ignition rather than when I hit the button to open the box.
When I first had this issue, I did wonder about the fuse and to LRs credit the fuse is actually in the back!

Well I have the same after having the box out to install steps so my glove box is in my office will have a look next weekend if I find anything will let you know

Mine started when I ran a power cable to feed an external sat nav, so I’m convinced it’s a pinched cable somewhere tha I just need to find. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Hi,

So I've managed to track down the wiring diagram for the glove box latch. Here are the pinouts for the switch aka Module Glove Compartment Control (D410).



Does anyone know what 'TFS' stands for on this? It takes a feed from fuse 16 in the boot. This keeps blowing every time I reconnect the glove box solenoid.

Good find! Only JLR could give such a simple device a complicated name Rolling Eyes


I’m guessing that the lower connections are for the lower glovebox, as that locks the box when the car is locked, so maybe that’s what the inhibit and TFS are for?

My issue is different from yours, in that no fuses blow, the switch just burns out, rendering the lower switch non-working. The top still works. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
