2011 5.0 S/C Autobiograpgy Buying Advice

Hi Guys

I'm looking at buying a 2011 5.0 S/C Autobiography with 75000 kilometers. Is there any particular week points I should look for when inspecting?

I currently own a 2007 3.6 Vogue, mostly maintained by myself. Does the 2011 5.0 S/C have the same 6 speed auto as my 3.6? and suffer the same problems?

Thanks for your help.

United Kingdom

the 3.6 has a zf6hp26 box and the 5.0 has an uprated zf6hp28 box ..

the 5.0 does suffer from a front end rattle which is expensive to sort..you'll find more info on this if you search..

other wise they are sweet motors with loads of options included in the spec. ... - .- -.

Love my 2011 5.0 AB and wouldn't change it - mind you mines only done 41k miles so not even broken in yet. Forget the fuel economy and just enjoy it 😎 "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

I've had two, both of which rattled rather like a diesel at tick over, there are tsb's related (timing chain guides & supercharger 'snout' updates) which I had carried out on one under warranty, but didn't make much difference as far as I could make out.

Thanks Gents

Is the issue causing the noise a repair the needs to be done or just annoying.

Was there any further updates that the 2012 gets that are an improvement on the 2011

I would try to find one that has had the timing chain tensioners replaced with the new parts. Honestly I would value the updated parts greatly at least $3500 or 15-30k miles e.g. 80k with new tensioners > 50k miles without tensioners, or a value add of 3500 for two identical 7700 GVW "cars". After not having mine on the road for around 9 weeks, I thank the Lord pretty much every time she runs well.

The water pumps on these have also been known to go, I would replace it. I would also advocate keeping on top of oil by checking every month and changing every 5-7.5k miles or six months and apparently you "have to use" 5w-20. If overheating or low oil light come on stop the "car" immediately.

Or go for a 4.2 SC AB... Whistle

2012 also suffers from the timing chain tensioners, even 2013 per my mechanic.

So there are two or three different types of rattles on these off of the top of my head:

The injectors tick - normal.

The supercharger can sound like a bag of marbles which needs a new SC coupler, I believe LR calls it a SC isolator. Per GM (who utilize the same SC often) if the SC noise is audible above 2 or 3k RPM it is abnormal and needs to be replaced (fixed). There is a TSB from LR regarding the play or slack in the nose and examining the blades to ensure they turn well

There can also be a fan clutch which is easy.

Unfortunately the timing chain tensioner isolators are what I would consider serious. I drove mine home a few miles home and immediately noticed a great increase in noise at idle. I'll post a video of what mine sounded like, but it sounded like the chain was hitting the block and the valves were a bit louder. I would also suspect that a few of these "cars" may have had such a noise as the impetus to be sold as the timing chain tensioners don't neccessarily throw codes.

FWIW I wrote up a buyers guide here that goes into each year and the differences and what to lookout for with mostly accurate info: http://offroadrover.com/range-rover-buying-guide/

Totally agree re the 4.2 by comparison, had a few one of which I had at the same time as the rattly 5.0 and it was near silent by comparison when compared sde by side.

When I had the tensioners & SC snout / coupler done under warranty they also found that two of the variable cam gears were not working (having assembed everything but unable to get it to run correctly) they gave me no choice but to pay for the parts although they fitted them at no labour whilst everything was apart (again). Work was carried out by Stratstone Cheltenham who returned the car filthy (oily marks all over the ivory leather interior) damaged, front bumper bracket broken and bumper partially hanging off and with surface scratches down both sides from I can only assume driving down narrow lanes past branches etc. They agreed to refund the additional cost for the cam gears (around £600) and once I'd sorted out the problems I sold it on. I'd not have another 5.0 I'm afraid and I'll never darken Stratstones doorway again.

Loving my L405 4.4 diesel that replaced the 5.0, always swore I'd not have a diesel, irony is its quieter at tickover than the SC by a long way!
