hi just popping over from defender2 , I am looking for my first range rover,i will still be keeping the defender,the range rover will be used very little,just as a second car,not sure which model I want,budget of £10k any help or advice please, is it best to buy pre2006 for the cheap tax? petrol or diesel mpg figures please any pointers or advice ,cheers

If your not going to use it much then IMHO I wouldn't bother, they really don't like not being used... better to save the money and hire one for the odd weekend...

If not and you do want one then for that you should be able to get a nice 4.2 SC....  Pete

should not say this ! but i have never put mine on charge longest left 3 wks and still start

I had a 2005 TD6 and loved it. The stereo was better than in my 405. I got around 20MPG and had it chipped with no problems. The only real problem was the noise of the engine. The performance didn't bother me, but it was quite slow. Love the thing overall.

If you aren't going to use it much then the mileage/fuel consumption argument is pretty mute. Diesels don't like being under used, stuff starts sticking and then things go bang......

Petrol for sure will be the best option. Either a SC or a non SC 4.4 with the jag engine should be in budget. And for a little used car at that price point is what I'd go for.

Plus it will be smoother than the diesel. You would get the best pick on the TD6s but the TDV8s would be mostly leggy and imho that would be the better of the diesels all things equal. However the petrols generally suffer less engine and gearbox troubles by all accounts so may prove the better buy.

But as Pete says they really don't like not being used. So if you buy one then make sure it is used fairly regularly and do some decent runs in it too👍 There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

14 mpg round town on the 4.2

ok you may want to know why I ask about running costs,
to start of with I will not part with my defender,which at present does about 9k a year , wife drives to work and back about 5 miles per day ,we use it as a day to day car all other times,camping with roof tent,towing, caravan,and sometimes work as a joiner,we also use the defender as a dog kennel , when we get visitors we put the dogs in it as they are hyper,
the rane rover will be used for towing caravan and day to day transport for wife to work I guess between this and the defender about 4000 miles per year each,so do I need diesel,petrol,or a gas auto
