Broken wheel nut

Well my first attempt at a rattle gun to put new wheels on has gone bad.

The nut just spins. I'm assuming the alloy cap had broken away from the real nut underneath. Any suggestions how to resolve this? ______________________________

Are you using the right size socket ?

I've only ever heard of them rattling, not coming completely off

The next size down socket and a big hammer is usually the way - hammer the socket on then attach to the ratchet - you may of may not be able to get the nut back out of the socket, so be prepared to write it off.

Second thoughts - if you've got a new toy - are you sure its working ?

By rattle gun, I assume you mean a kind of impact wrench ? Is it definitely spinning & not just rattling ?

Do you have a regular ratchet to bar to try with the same socket ?

Thanks Alistair. I can turn the alloy cap by hand. I can see the real nut under the cap. It's not moving.

Yes was using an air rattle gun. ______________________________

I know the nuts rattle a bit, but I've not heard of them disconnecting.

I also didn't think there was enough room for them to spin completely , but it sounds like there is Shocked

Sounds like you need to wreck it and just get it off then replace with a new nut. If you can't get any grips or pliers onto it, then I would hammer on a socket - not too much at first - see if it forces a grip onto the underlying nut - or if not, you can get some grips on the socket and may b able to pull the cap off.

Good luck Thumbs Up

BTW - it's the rattle guns that cause the caps to come loose in the first place - I don't let them near my car Thumbs Up

Just checking that this s a regular and not locking nut ?

I just asked someone else - they said either smaller socket or split the cap with a chisel to remove it

Had same problem trying to remove one of my nuts with normal socket.

Tried smaller sockets but just couldn't get a grip on the nut - in the end had to use a chisel to split the cap and then peel it away from the nut with pliers and brute force.

Even with the cap removed and the correct socket on the nut it still required two 15 stone blokes jumping up and down on a 3 metre piece of scaffold pole over the ratchet handle to even crack the nut loose Shocked It had seriously seized to the wheel and hub.

Good luck 2008 TDV8

Thanks, yes is the regular nut. The locking nut came off but it was looking worn and had some rust. I'll be buying a set of 20 soon. ______________________________

Dunno how different yours are, but I bought a set of 5 off eBay from a bloke in Sydney for $45. I wanted to get rid of the lock nuts.

Edit. Just looked at the above eBay ad. Different nuts to my L322 but a good price! Ron B. VK2OTC

Thanks Stan & Ron.
Yes both the P38 and early L322 had different wheel nuts.

Am I right in thinking the D3/4 & RRS L320 have the same wheel nuts as the 2006+ L322? ______________________________

Can you take one of yours off and measure it? I have a set of RRS nuts in the garage that were used with the RRS wheels I had on the P38A. I can measure them for you (not for sale, still needed for the RRS wheels). Ron B. VK2OTC

Can the 'cap' be removed from the nut, just to get you out of trouble?

I do recall being told that rattle guns aren't the best method with these nuts, and to just use a socket and breaker bar.

The 'rattling' knacks the cap

Thanks Ron. I don't need to drive it. I can wait for a set of wheel nuts.

My plan unless someone has a better idea is to angle grind a cut/slot at the top of the nut and use a cold chisel to split off the alloy cap. Then use a stillsons to get the nut off.

Yes, first and last use of the rattle gun me thinks. ______________________________
