Whats caused the nuts to be so tight in the first place ? Surely they must have been on and off a few times during the vehicles life ?

The locking nut is a distorted mess. It just slides over the nut.

No idea why they are so tight. They have been removed by LR and a tyre shop in the last 12 mths. ______________________________

I won't be putting on locking nuts again. Id also encourage anyone with an older RRV to remove original locking nuts before there's a problem.

In retrospect I would have done things differently. I was encouraged by someone (not from here) to hit it with the rattle gun before going to more difficult solutions. That only turned the locking key into a distorted mess and didn't work. If I had not done this I might have been able to use the locking key after taking off the alloy cap.

What I should have tried before removing the nut was (after making sure the nuts groves were again aligned) cutting a slot across the nut into the steel and banging in a heavy washer to lock the alloy and steel parts of the nut together. And trying the key again.

Welding a nut or bolt onto the nut wasn't the quick or easy solution many on the D3 forum suggested. And it didn't work for me.

Finally instead of wasting the better part of the weekend on this with no success I should have called it quits earlier and just booked it in to my usual Indy.

These nuts are on tight. I can't only blame the last tyre shop as the dealer had one of these wheels of last to do the brake hose recall. ______________________________

My tyre shop warned warned me about the risk of overtightening the locking nuts, "do the normal ones as tight as you like but be careful with the locking ones". When next my wheels are changed over I am thinking of replacing the locking nuts with normal ones, the view at the tyre shop as of others on here is that the locking ones are more trouble than they are worth.

The tyre shop also advised against the use of air tools for wheel nuts and I have left that as a standing instruction at the dealer's. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Too bad they are alloy wheels, Peter, otherwise an oxy might be the order of the day! Ron B. VK2OTC

Yes, I mostly regret not calling it quits Sat arvo, and spending Sun doing stuff with the fam. My usual Indy squeezed me in without a booking and fixed it for me today with some special gripping tool and a dirty big breaker bar. So it ended well.

I thought the red hot nut from welding would have helped but no.

I have to also mention Craig's advice on a different post about disconnecting the battery for an hour before welding. The car started and ran this morning without issue. Otherwise I would have started welding sooner and possibly done some ECU damage to top it off. ______________________________
