I am about to embark on the renovation of a Series 3, but need a decent socket set, a complete novice, so any help would be nice, thanks

Depends how much you want to spend.
I bought a basic Kamasa set, as I already had many sockets and a long breaker bar and that did me only needed to buy a socket this year yo fit the tow bar retaining bolt, then found I had one already.
I would suggest deep and normal sockets whatever you get.

Halford Professional range is a good starting point.

They have a lifetime guarantee and are well made.

The only slight issue is that a Series III may use Imperial-size buts and bolts, so make sure you're covered when selecting your socket set. The advantage is, old LR's only require around 4 sizes. Si. <This is my name.

Thanks guys, that is my issue, I have a very basic set and think the S3 is imperial as always a tad out (mm)

I would look for 6 point sockets rather than the more common 12 point sockets now generally available.
12 point sockets can easily round older bolt heads and nuts especially of they are very tight and a bit corroded.
6 point sockets of the correct size will grip anything without damage.

Hmmm... taking apart a Series 3, you don't need a socket set but you most definitely need a set of these...

Never had a nut or bolt they wouldn't work on, very impressed that they have just gathered dust in my toolbox whilst I've had the FF though...

They work very well, even on totally round nuts or bolts, they also work on studs...  Pete

I'd be looking at a set of hexagonal impact sockets, Imperial if I'm not mistaken, and a half decent ratchet and a breaker bar...... the impact sockets have 2 advantages...... they are 6 sided so they are less likely to slip on rusted nuts, and if they do then just reach for the next size down and the hammer... works every time

The biggest of the Halfrords set has both imperial and metric, they are not as good a quality as they use to be, but still good enough and incredible value for money. Used mine to work on my IIa for her MOT yesterday. letters not necessarily in the right order

On this one I'd agree with the impact sockets - but some of the Halfords sets come with those, though IIRC just metric, so you might need to buy a couple more. A big breaker bar is always handy - and also the Irwin extractors can be a life saver.

Depending on how much you value your time, I'd just buy all of the above before you start out - it's probably a couple of hundred quid in total

They do a wide range of imperial as well as metric and I have been very pleased with what I have bought from them, nice people to deal with too. Forget all the modern socket sets and spanners

go round all the junk fairs, jumble shops second hand places, collect all the whit worth, AF stuff you can find.........

then go and buy a complete nut and bolt set for the S111 in stainless

and have fun............its just like a big mecarno model to work on...........

How much? That Halfrauds set is super expensive even with the discount..... and as far as life time warranty is concerned.... I have been using and abusing a set of Nu-Tool impact sockets for over 25 years, and they still work But really isn't anything to go wrong with them.... they are designed to have the stuffing knocked out of them and survive, and there is no chrome to rust and flake off, and rip your hands apart either

What ever you decide to go with, a 24" breaker bar is a must, as being a 40+ year old car there will be a lot of rust welded nuts and bolts...... and when I say welded I kid you not..... it's worse than if they had been glued. And although the hammer and chisel was a joke item...... there have been many a time in the past where I've had to cold chisel a nut and bolt due to it being rusted shut.... They can be a sanity saver  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
