Transfer box has developed a dry rubbing sound.

Hi folks,
My 2006 4.4 petrol version as developed the above mentioned noise. The fluid has been changed but it made no difference. I guess the box will go on for a long time yet. My question is wether or not it is worth changing just because of a noise allbeit annoying.

I don’t know if your symptoms are similar but there is a Land Rover Technical Bulletin for the DD295 transfer box (for later vehicles) titled “Transfer Case High Speed Whine – 6 Speed ZF Transmission Only”

Situation : A customer may report a concern of a loud whining noise whilst driving at high speed above 65mph

Cause : Chain micro geometry wear

Action : Replace chain

However, I’ve seen a number of these transfer boxes for sale on eBay which were removed due to ‘noise’ and the one I stripped down had a badly worn mainshaft bearing :
