Steering Column replacement

Hi,

A couple of days a go, my key would not turn in the ignition, so I had the car towed to a garage and they have just told me that the solenoid has failed and that I need a new steering column, which would cost about £3.5K. The key will not turn, and there is no clicking noise from the car, however, the radio and lights will work.

They have said that another temporary option is to drill a 2mm hole and squirt it with WD40 when it happens again, so for the time being I have gone with this and will collect the car tomorrow.

Is it work looking at a reconditioned steering column, or should I bite the bullet and spend £3.5K.

Thanks in advance!

Well that's weird, didn't think that problem happened to a late one, recognised problem on the BMW FF's. I read that it was sorted when they facelifted...

Hopefully someone who knows the later ones better will comment soon.... Pete

Stan - They just told me it was the locking solenoid that was failing and they cannot be replaced, so it has to be the whole steering column.

I will be speaking to the garage in more detail tomorrow, but they have said it is a module within the steering column that is causing the issue and only the whole steering column replacement can fix it.

£3.5k plus 2 hours labour.

I will ask them about why not the ignition switch tomorrow.

Thanks

It's the steering lock solenoid that get's stuck on the early cars, it runs out of lube, dries up and stops moving, the 2mm hole is a bodge to get it working for a limited time, if the hole is drilled slightly wrong then it will damage the lock.

I thought the later cars, after the 2006 face lift where they moved the key to the dash didn't have a steering lock or it was a totally different setup...

If it is as just mentioned then it is a fairly easy job to remove the column drill out the rivets that hold it together, and fix the issue within, a new one isn't necessary....

AFAIK Craig has sorted this problem for people in the past so it could be worth a trip over there for £3,500... Pete

Hallo, the columns with the defect solenoid are inside until May 2009, had here a RR TDV8 from 2008 from switzerland (was transported on a trailer, because fuse 18 trick and dangerous hole for WD40 was limited time), build out the column, new solenoid fitted, new electronic fitted, client payment was 1.300 Euro, and was happy to drive back one day later on his own wheels..., best wishes, Uli L405 SDV8 2017 + Lancia Flavia Coupe 1964 + RRS L494 3.0 SDV6 + C220CDI Convertible 2021

I was lucky enough to pick up a near new column as a spare from a 2009 MY10 L322. Is this different to the column in a MY08 L322? Will it fit? Sorry if it's a high jack. ______________________________

The Mod.10 are cheaper of course, because they have no mistakes, because new construction, look at the part number, and look in Google Pictures, you will see the difference L405 SDV8 2017 + Lancia Flavia Coupe 1964 + RRS L494 3.0 SDV6 + C220CDI Convertible 2021

Shocked How does the steering column lock stop the key from turning in the ignition, when it is only linked by wires? does not compute Shocked

When I put my key in the barrel the first thing that happens is the steering lock disengages as the transducer chip is read by the ignition switch, this is before any key turning has been done.... so unless there is a second solenoid on the key that is activated by the steering solenoid disengaging, there is no way that the column can have any effect over the key turning, as there is no physical link. If there is a second solenoid on the key, can it not be removed? as long as the steering is moving freely then I can't see there being any problem... Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer...
