Need your opinions please!

Supposed to be driving to the Alps tomorrow and just got a massive screw in one of my summer tyres. They are Conti Cross Contact 255/50 R20.

Don't fancy driving 900km with that so rang the dealer if they can replace it. They only have the equivalent Pirellis in Stock and would have to order the Contis and don't yet know how long that will take.

Would it be OK to have Contis on the front and Priellis on the back? Which are better in general (noise, grip etc.)?

Would be interested in your opinions as I will have to make a decision later today.

Will be fine as you suggest. Continentals are quieter but have a tendency to wear on the edges. Pirellis are harder wearing but a little more noisy. Grip levels are pretty much identical.

Shame you're in Germany as I have a conti with 5.5mm which I keep for this exact reason. You could have it for free but shipping might be costly and time consuming.

What do you have as a spare tyre ?

If that's half decent, I would put that on the car & take a winter tyre (assuming you have one) - or even the one with a screw in - as a spare

@mzplcg Thanks for the offer. Would have been just the job. You were right about the wear on the edges. My front two had considerably more wear on the edges than in the middle.

@Alistair My spare is a Pirelli Scorpion winter tyre.

Dealer sorted it today. Got two new Pirellis on the back and they shifted the remaining rear Conti to the front because it was in better condition. I'll replace the two fronts when I switch back to the winter tyres in October. Can'z tell the difference noise-wise yet but I always listen to music anyway

I was unlucky as the screw (looks like a wheel arch screw, not mine) had only just pierced the tyre. But pierced is pierced and that screw cost me 600EUR (or about 10 quid as of recently ).

We used to have problems where I worked (sports car OEM) with undertray bolts dropping out having not been tightened properly in the workshop. Because they had the heaviest pan heads in the world, they always ended up sitting thread up, ready to go through tyres. Happened to at least 1-2 prototype car tyres a year, And mine when I was loading up for some off site testing

At least my fronts were only 255's, I hate to think how much the 335 that got done once would have cost

Just noticed that the two new Pirellis they put on the back are 255/55/R20 whereas the two old Contis on the front are 255/50/R20. Does that matter much? Yes - it matters - your centre differential will be working overtime

Hard to tell if it will have done any damage, but would have thought it would have caused some wear.
