Starter grind

Car wouldn't start yesterday, battery voltage reading 11.5V on IID tool. Same batt that came with car so changed it.

Now I have a grinding sound after the car starts - same sound you get on a manual car with you keep cranking after the car has started.

Wtf is wrong now? 2004 L322 V8

Can you access the top E12 bolt for the starter motor from the top of the engine bay?

I assume the E53 X5 starter motor is a direct fit? (£100 vs £250 for 'LR') 2004 L322 V8

I don't think you can get at it from the top, if you remove the exhaust heat shield you can get at it from the rear of the right side front wheel arch, it's easier to unbolt it and then remove the wiring, best to undo the other end first, or disconnect the battery...

It's a right pain getting the bolts to line up again when refitting, I found doing the top bolt about 2 turns then line up the bottom one worked best , it's the pull from the wiring that throws it off, still easier to do it this way than try to wire it up where you can't see or get a spanner.....

Don't know if a BMW one will fit, sorry...

I got a recon Bosch one locally for not much more than £100....

There must be someone out there rebuilding them...?? Pete

I called some Censored who sells used ones, asked £150 and said 'buy elsewhere' when I asked if I could return it if it doesn't work.

Dealer asking £700 lol.

The LR part no. does have a bmw equivalent...just need to figure if its worth the risk to import. 2004 L322 V8

Most irritating bit is that the old battery was prob fine, although it was 2 yrs old. 2004 L322 V8

The Range Rover one has a vent to it, I expect if the BMW one is different it won't have the vent, can't see the fitment would change, I know the gearbox casings are different but the bellhousings are the same AFAIK... Pete
