Engine gone - what to do ?

Ive had this for 18 months and i paid 10K for it.
Ive had it fully serviced and looked after it using correct parts via a specialist friends garage.
Last week it started a bad rattle from the engine, engine / amber light illuminated then went off.
Made it home and having read various threads on sites thought it was just the cam chain tensioner area?
However, now its gone into the garage, due to him being busy, today the issue is a lot bigger.
The number 1 piston has damaged the bore and oil has been forced out of most seals - basic in a nutshell.
Looking at the price of engines and around 15 hours man power to remove / refit and get running this will cost more than the cars worth.
The body and running gear are all as perfect as can be but its no use without a power plant.
The engine is the 2005 BMW 4.4L V8 LPG conversion added. 122K 5 speed.

Choices or ideas please?
Scrap the lot - total loss of money, obviously not but who wants a dead car.
Replace engine with the same variant
Replace with a lump with more gears (Cool petrol if thats possible

sorry for the delay in saying thank you for the responses - so thanks gents.
Yes the 3k sounds good but I think its gone.

I can only find 3 on flea bay 1 in Edinburgh, 2 in Barking area.
Edinburgh = nil stock, 1 in Barking wants 3895 cash in hand but if i pay by card VAT will be added. So no idea how a 1 year warranty would hold up if I have paid cash … hmmmm
The other in Barking area is asking 5650 + VAT.
Add on the tow truck delivery cost 200 approx, and the current front end strip down from my mechanic here to pay you can guess that I am unable to justify these costs.
So having spent most of today phoning e-mailing other sources I think I'm going to offer the whole car to a salvage yard / breaker. If i had a garage or under cover I would break it down myself and sell each as and when.
Some cheeky bloke offered 1k for the whole lot so he was quoted the sex and travel option.

Now believe this could be the best thing thats happened as Im going down the route of a TDV8 L322 vehicle.

Wealy, cheers mate but looking on the bright side. This is the best owned car I have ever driven for the comfort, quality, sound system, road noise, all passengers in comfort, road presence - not in a bully ish way but the curtesy others give you, etc etc.
The only gripe I have is that it just went, if I was not servicing, green laneing or off roaring regularly, or thrashing the hell out of it I could take it on the chin more. You do need a spare amount of rainy day silver in hand which I only just have but this has down me now.
Im using taxis to and from work and I miss my big shed - taxis are terrible, even the mercs i get i rough in comparison.
Anyway, heres to the future …… someones got to win the lottery !!!!!
I will get you all a tank of fuel if I do. You might need to drive over to the Bahamas but you'll get your tank full

How much would a salvage / breakers offer for it out of interest?

Can you not rebuild the lump put a new liner in change the seals etc - I know its not the same but I took the engine out of my last one and replaced a liner for 800 quid might be worth investigating

Chawks, only 1 offer of a grand …… the others say I have to take it to them to have a look. Am I missing something here ?
So my engine now miraculously runs or I push the beast ….

Sandyt, I would do this myself if I could, but with all the oil seals reportedly blown or leaking I guess that it needs a full strip down, gaskets etc which again leads to the issue of might as well get someone to do it all with a warranty.
Im surprised this engine is not more readily available.

Im actually scared to start stripping it for spares to sell as an engine will appear then !!!!

Work is my main priority at the moment so will get a cheap run around for next month or so whilst looking for a time served old man type engineer engine builder that can take his time and rebuild it.

Thanks for the comments people.

We had a remanufactured engine from Ivor Searle for a VW Van it was a 2.5ltr Audi Unit we ran it for over 100,000 miles on the replacement engine and never had a problem, it looks like they can do your own engine http://www.ivorsearle.co.uk/remanufactured_engines.htm Thumbs Up

I am in no way associated with Ivor Serle, but have used them many times so I feel I know them and they do a superb job. I have been in the workshop a couple of times and the have some super machinery!

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Bit of a heavy beast to push down to the local breakers lol. Either way its a bitter pill to swallow - loss of £9k in under two years or spend ££££ more fixing. I love the V8's - had one sold it regret it!! If you do decide to get shot let me know - i could be interested on a new project .
