L322 Towbar swap...

Towbar

Would the Westfalia detachable swap from a 55 plate to a 08 plate with no hassle?

Cheers

David

I think the tow bar will fit. It is the armature (the huge chunk of metal under the car) that changed between MY06 onwards - to do with the exhaust mountings.

If you have the armature the square hole receiver fro this will take the farmers hitch or the detachable bar.

mmmm Wish I'd looked under the car too now!

Time will tell I suppose.

Pre 06, the exhaust hangers bolt upwards to the chassis iirc and had to undo them to get the supporting brackets of the armature on.

Post 06, the exhaust hangers bolt on to the armature itself.

The exhaust mounting points stay the same though I think.

So you may need a different set of hangers to hold the exhaust. V8 or else ...

The car already has a non-detachable towbar (I hate them).

Does that mean armature is going to be there or not there?

From looking at the fitting instructions the Armitage will not be there.

There appear to be different depending on whether post 05 or not, but the fitting instructions are identical (even to the reference number). Confused. Yup.

I believe all the fittings and fitting points are the same, and I've had a westfalia detachable tow bar fitted to an 11 Vogue SE and the only difference as mentioned is that two of the fixing points share the exhaust bolts so with the tow bar fitted, the exhaust hangs about 1 inch lower.

The more common detachable one you see with the vertical cylinder, I don't think needs to be attached as above so the exhaust sit's where it's supposed to.

I was going to ask a LR specialist, (rather than the towbar man) whether it was essential to drop the exhaust 1 inch, but it's been no problem, so I haven't therefore bothered.

Can't find anyone to do weld hangers on, so it's a new beam.

£185 or thereabouts from PFjones. Could be worse.

it depends the type of tow bar on the car. is it a LR or Westfalia farmers type or a brink/witter type?

some will assume that the flange farmers type is a non detachable, but it does come off leaving the armature in place and a detachable head can be fitted for about 200. if its a non genuine bar then it will all have to come off and be replaces.

this is what the genuine farmers hitch looks like.

There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
