Inconsistent vibration at around 70

Hi all,
well, first 'what might it be' question from me since getting the car.
Last week it developed an unpleasant vibration on the A1 running at around 70ish. I slowed down wondering what it was (thinking it might be tyre or something similar) and then tyre pressure warning light came on. In some respects, I thought 'great - that explains the vibration'. However, I pulled into the services, checked tyre pressures and they were all fine. Drove to my destination and no issue (most of the way from there it was less than 70 anyway).
Driving back home, tyre pressure light went off and car behaved fine anyway with no vibration.

Since then, driven (not on motorway) several times and it's been fine.

Then, today, drive down to North London without a vibration at all but then on way back, same unpleasant vibration around 70 but again cleared itself (no warning lights at all at any point). Stopped at destination and again on the way back, things were fine for a while then got vibration again.

Obviously I'll go and get it checked out but anyone have any thoughts what it could be? I've dabbed brakes etc while it's been happening to ensure it's not a binding issue etc.

On the matter of getting it checked, who's best recommended in Herts? GandG or Bennington or someone else?

Thanks

The cowl at the bottom of the windscreen can vibrate and cause a buzzing noise. Would that be it?

Hi,

sorry - should have said this is a vibration through the steering/drivetrain.

The cowling has previously been replaced though Smile

Check you don't have a brake calliper sticking on. Rear ones are quite common for it. Next time it does it pull Over and see if one wheel is getting warm. Did it on mine a couple of months ago, was o/s rear.

Thanks - will definitely check that. As I mentioned, I did dab the brakes a few times when it happened and it didn't seem to make any difference. However, while we were away over New Year when the car performed perfectly for 6 days and decent mileages, when we stopped once the near-side rear brake did smell hot - I had forgotten about that!

I'd be taking the two front tyres off and examining them for damage as it sounds like the tracking has worn the inside edges. A visual inspection with the tyres on the car may not be adequate unless you have relatively new tyres of course.

Regards

John

again, thanks for the input. I'll take a closer look at the new tyres. However, why would this be inconsistent even at the same speeds if tyre related?

I've had this with sticking brakes, no difficulty tracing due to clouds of smoke, yours is maybe just starting and the brake pistons retract enough most of the time. In my case it was passenger side front. Only Range Rovers since 1988

the rear off-side disk certainly seems to be getting warmer than others and looks like the pad is not sitting flat (ie there's a clear narrow band around the center of the disc vs the inner and outer parts).

However, having driven the car again today, the vibration is a lot worse and now is below 50 too even down to 20/30isg.

Going over to G and G in Ware tomorrow to get them to take a look / experience it.

I'd pull the pads out the caliper and make sure everything is free to move as it should. However, if it's been rubbing as bad as you say, then expect the pads to be burned out. V8 or else ...

Thanks. Will see what G and G say in the morning. I'm happy to do most things to brakes myself but the RR is a new beast to me (let alone sorting out jacking it due to the side steps having to be removed - hence getting G and G to look first!)

I'll update here once I know more

Inconsistent vibration - now resolved

Thanks all for your inputs

Turned out to be caliper as suspected by a couple of you. Now replaced but necessitated new discs too thanks to the heat warped original.

Anyone who likes alternative heat sources can always use binding brakes and somehow use heat-transfer from the very hot disc!

Good service from G and G too who fitted it in at short notice.
