cliff5.0...how are you getting better mpg in sport vs auto on your 4.4jag NA (I have same)?

On the highway this would never happen as sport holds higher RPM. Sport also shifts at higher RPM, using more fuel.

I use the momentum of the truck to keep moving in sport. Fast acceleration than mostly coasting. In driving this style sport returns better MPG. (I also live above 5800 feet and often climb to over 10,000, so perhaps it is a special altitude and use case -- think driving in 75mph speed limits over the continental divide)

This led me to believe that sport mode doesn't slow the truck when you remove your foot from gas (not press the brake as I inartfully wrote before).

I get about 16.5 around town and about 20mpg On the highway in the 4.4NA in us gallons/miles in sport and between .2 to .8 mpg less in normal mode. I think you should drive fast then coast slightly over the limit in sport and see if you get better MPGs then Normal. Further, since the driving style, conditions and routes are different it would make any blanket statement that sport mode couldn't return better MPG presumably false (even given the disclaimer of on the highway since highways can vary greatly in altitude, incline, speed, and climates, 90mph in Nevada is going to be different than 55mph in NY, or unlimited somewhere in Germany).

You may find that because the transmission holds the gears for longer and will downshift more readily to keep you in the torque band it "lunges" less in the corners. I find if I'm in drive or manually in a higher gear that there's so much bottom end torque in the engine if you haven't braked hard enough the car pushes itself around the corner when you take your foot off the brake. When I'm in sport mode it's downshifted further and you get some assistance in going around the corner from engine braking. Therefore feels a bit smoother.

Mind you this is for a TDV8 so if cliff5.0s comment is true then petrols are set up differently from diesels because mine will much more readily downshift in sport to keep inside the turbo's torque bands. If I'm "pootling" around the local country roads it can be in as much as 3 gears lower in sport which makes a massive difference in the feel of the way it corners.

Also - I have left it in SPORT accidentally after joining a motorway and I find if I've been driving along gently it's almost as if the powertrain has decided to revert to normal as it's not needed anymore. If I then flick it back to drive and back into sport it livens up again. Might be another placebo but something I've noticed...

The 4.4 tdv8 has an 8speed which I do not know of. The ZF 6hp26 and 6hp28 are what I am familiar with. The zf 6 speed has two drive modes and sport modes which is dependent on how you are driving, there is a sporty normal mode and a normal sport mode (not right syntax -- I'll find the official document) that automatically select based on your throttle input and jerk. Still looking for the document on land rover document of the different zf modes, but I believe someone copied some of it here:

I'm getting a steady 16mpg US on my 4.4NA jag engine. My drive is almost all highway and I have it in normal mode. If I Put in in sport @ around 70mph and bump it into Normal the RPMs significantly drop (like an overdrive gear would). My RPMs basically stay around 2k in normal drive on the highway. This would almost certainly mean sport would get worse on the highway...it would have to with higher RPMs.

I use 93 gas almost exclusively. Sometimes 91, but never below that. I'm thinking maybe changing the plugs would net me a bit better MPG. would love to be able to get around 20 on the highway.

Not sure what you mean by normal sport and sporty normal? From what I can see I have normal drive which is your regular automatic and if I bump the shifter to te left it puts in in sport mode where you can manually switch the gears by pushing forward or back. 2014 FF Autobiography 5.0 SC

When you first switch it is different than driving in that mode for a while. If you are in normal and switch to sport mine often downshifts immediately. Sport mode isn't in itself a sixth gear inhibitor, sport normal mode will shift into sixth, super sport mode (when you are driving hard or cornering) will inhibit sixth gear. If you are driving gently you can cruise in sport mode and engage sixth gear.

4.2SC is one of the best engines in a RR imo. 5.0 is fantastic engine too, maybe a bit rougher or louder at idle imo.
