I'm sure Pat would/will warn you, since it's part of the "Fast Lane" service, but care must be taken when flashing the gearbox - the adaptive values must be reset and the TCM musn't be over 80 deg C IIRC. If the box is on it's last legs, it can end very badly. Not trying to put anyone off; just be aware. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE chaps as LFW says.... don't update anything unless you are having problems with it and then be prepared for it to be an all or nothing issue....

It really is a last resort, and does, time and again, result in new ECU's etc being required or the car never being the same again....

Remember it's not an iPhone it's a Land Rover....!!!!!!! Pete

here's an extract from a pm from Pat,

The clear adaption routine may cause the transmission to behave erratically over a period of time. It will need a few drive cycles to get back to normal. Drive the vehicle normally and make sure that the transmission shifts all gears.

Clearing adaption shall only be performed if an oil change, firmware reflash or if the transmission was repaired. Clearing adaption for no reasons on a transmission that is working correctly may worsen its behavior. In fact any non needed work made on a transmission that is working correctly may worsen its behavior

so if you have a gear selection problem or one of the above , then its a probable cause to do an upgrade.. ... - .- -.

If the box is knackered though, an adaptive reset can also push it over the edge. Thumbs Up

With regard to flashing in general, as Pat will confirm, they've never failed to recover an ECU (however hard they've tried), so the IID flashing process itself, and the bootloader recovery method are very reliable. Still though, if you don't have a problem, it's always best to leave alone. Wink Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Some firmware do provide improvements and do help in prolonging the life of a component. For example, the suspension ECU reflash on older cars which increases the compressor motor life expectancy. In this case, there is no particular risk associated with updating the ECU.

It is another story for the transmission. The latest versions do offer some improvements but the risk factor is real. Keep in mind that it is not an electrical risk but a mechanical one in this particular case. The reflash itself is safe but the procedure requires to clear the adaptions. On a worn out transmission, the ECU might not be able to reach the previous adaption level thus worsening it's behavior. The latest version released by ZF do take this into account thus reducing this risk. It is up to the owner to decide if this risk is worth taking. Of course, the risk is significantly reduced when a transmission is working well already. So far, we've had good success except for the really bad ones that needed a rebuild anyway.

Electrically wise, the ECUs are very robust and it is almost impossible to brick one. We did try over and over again but our recovery algorithm always managed to save the day.

Edit: LFW is right about the bootloader architecture Thumbs Up http://www.gap-diagnostic.com/

Yes I can report that it has removed all the soft thuds and clonks I was feeling before

What model and year have you got as I have a 2004 petrol with some harsh clonks but I think the software fix only applies to the Jag vehicles post 2006?

I thought that may be the case, i found a trouble shooting flowchart from ZF that referred to the harsh clunk and the software upgrade but i dont think they did such a thing for the ZF5HP24.

You can see the chart on this forum.
