I am interested in your thoughts as to which size tyre would be best for the most suitable ride on a Range Rover Vogue 2003. Currently I have 18" on there, however, am awaiting (for those of you not impressed with "blinging" them up apologies now but we canny all be the same!!!) a bodykit to be fitted and have been told that larger size wheels are now required! I am just a mere female so did not even think about this aspect!!!! Der!!!!! And no I am not blonde!!!!

Generally speaking the larger the wheels you fit the rougher the ride becomes. Because in order to fit the larger wheels the side wall of the tyres has to become smaller. Because the overall diameter of the wheel/tyre combination stays roughly the same to fit inside the wheel arch. The basic issue is the tyre is not longer deep enough to soak up the bumps, so you're reliant on the suspension doing it alone.

Regarding the wheel nuts, if the wheels have small holes between each of the mounting holes they use the early type nuts (like yours). If they just have dimples between the mounting holes they use the later nuts. |

Forgive me if you realise this. But i notice you used the word 'required'. I assume you realise you can still have your body kit fitted and keep your existing wheels? ie. it might look odd with the body kit and old wheels but will still be perfectly functional. It gives you some time to find some wheels/spread the cost without delaying your body kit or taking your car off the road. I don't know your circumstances, but if the garage/bodyshop have told you new wheels are required to do the work, it's not entirely accurate. |

Okay thanks! Yes I have been told that there will be too much of a gap and it would look ridiculous! So am desperately looking around and to be honest wheels and tyres are the last thing I want to be searching for as not a thing of interest to myself! A little modernisation is turning in to a headache! |

If you go bigger than the LR optional wheels (tyres sizes 255/55R19 and 255/50R20) or choose non-LR homologated wheels you might need to check with your insurers. Generally the larger the wheel the more easily it is damaged. There are plenty of stories of non-LR wheels cracking on potholes etc so I personally would not buy anything other than LR.

It's true it will likely look daft. Although the overall diameter isn't massively different, you'll see more tyre side wall and with tyres being black it will make the gap appear bigger. But it means you'll be able to at least use it for as long as you can stand the look of it while searching for the perfect wheels. Rather than pay over the odds for some tomorrow just because they're the only ones you can find. ![]() |
