Size Tyres ???

I am interested in your thoughts as to which size tyre would be best for the most suitable ride on a Range Rover Vogue 2003. Currently I have 18" on there, however, am awaiting (for those of you not impressed with "blinging" them up apologies now but we canny all be the same!!!) a bodykit to be fitted and have been told that larger size wheels are now required! I am just a mere female so did not even think about this aspect!!!! Der!!!!! And no I am not blonde!!!!

21" I have been told give a rough ride?!

Any help would be greatly received! Also, if you have any recommendations as to where I can purchase second hand?!

Cheers!

if you search on this forum wheel tyre size and also which type of wheelnuts etc, you can gain some info on upgrading your wheels. When you know what size and style you want get onto ebay, and look near to you. later wheels need the later nuts, (post 2006) (actually bolts to be correct) and sticking with genuine land rover will mean you are better off with corrrect fit, and will be strongest duty etc. (aftermarket wheels can crack) yes, 21 inch are a bit too ambitious, but there are plenty of 20 inch styles, like typical vogue wheels, or from supercharged model. buying wheels often mean you need tyres, and its best to buy a set with decent tyres, and with good shoulders, ie not worn on the edges.
take you time to choose. i have a 2002 and i run it on 20 inch supercharged wheels. and these are easy to clean. that makes my life easier too.
if you are going to buy overfinch wheels, you are entering an area of reproductions and fakes. be carefull, as you could buy a new set of fake wheels for £600 (ish) but they are not in my opinion, up to the job strength wise. (-in the 22 inch size)
look for what you like, (google images) and post a picture here, we might be able to tell you the style or wheel 'moniker' to search for sale etc.

"which size tyre would be best for the most suitable ride."

If it is best ride quality you are after, I should stick with the 18 inch. The bigger the diameter wheels, the worse the ride. 2011 Vogue TDV8 4.4

Generally speaking the larger the wheels you fit the rougher the ride becomes. Because in order to fit the larger wheels the side wall of the tyres has to become smaller. Because the overall diameter of the wheel/tyre combination stays roughly the same to fit inside the wheel arch. The basic issue is the tyre is not longer deep enough to soak up the bumps, so you're reliant on the suspension doing it alone.

I've got factory fitted 20" on mine, and the ride is acceptable, but obviously not as good as 19's or 18's.

As mine happens to be the same colour as yours....

Also bear in mind with the really big wheels you'll struggle to find anything but pure road tyres for them, you might find yourself getting embarrassed in winter or if you stray into a muddy field.

Regarding the wheel nuts, if the wheels have small holes between each of the mounting holes they use the early type nuts (like yours). If they just have dimples between the mounting holes they use the later nuts.

remember you sometimes see what you want but its too far away.
some tyre shops have sets from peoples new sets left over etc.
sometimes forum members are selling wheels.
consider their condition, (paint bubbling, kerbmarks) matching tyres?. -premium tyres? budget tyres.
loads of aftermarket wheels available, with cheap wornout tyres. steer clear. (pun unintended.)

Forgive me if you realise this. But i notice you used the word 'required'. I assume you realise you can still have your body kit fitted and keep your existing wheels? ie. it might look odd with the body kit and old wheels but will still be perfectly functional. It gives you some time to find some wheels/spread the cost without delaying your body kit or taking your car off the road. I don't know your circumstances, but if the garage/bodyshop have told you new wheels are required to do the work, it's not entirely accurate.

Thanking you all!

I am having the Barugzai bodykit fitted and have been advised 22", however, due to advice on here I will probably opt for 20" as do not want to run the risk of an uncomfortable ride just to coincide with the "look"! Will have to change as at the moment they are 18" and there will be too much of a gap ~ they will look like mini wheels on a tank!

........................Now for the comments on Barugzai I guess! I'll grab my popcorn!!!!!

Okay thanks! Yes I have been told that there will be too much of a gap and it would look ridiculous! So am desperately looking around and to be honest wheels and tyres are the last thing I want to be searching for as not a thing of interest to myself! A little modernisation is turning in to a headache!

If you go bigger than the LR optional wheels (tyres sizes 255/55R19 and 255/50R20) or choose non-LR homologated wheels you might need to check with your insurers. Generally the larger the wheel the more easily it is damaged. There are plenty of stories of non-LR wheels cracking on potholes etc so I personally would not buy anything other than LR.

Ride quality will also be affected by tyre choice - I have been happy with both Pirelli Scorpion Zero (255/55R19) and Continental Cross Contact (255/50R20) as summer road tyres. If anything the 19s were slightly firmer, but the Contis have a reputation for wearing the sides off quickly, and not just if they are under-inflated, so that may be the price of their comfortable handling. I have read on here that Pirelli Scorpion Verde are quiet and offer good comfort on the 322, I have experienced them only on the 405, where they were fine. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Hi Shuv.it.
although not experienced myself, there's also a bit of info on here regarding vibration with the td6 on oversize wheels.
I maybe corrected by someone with more information.
Greg. Thumbs Up

It's true it will likely look daft. Although the overall diameter isn't massively different, you'll see more tyre side wall and with tyres being black it will make the gap appear bigger. But it means you'll be able to at least use it for as long as you can stand the look of it while searching for the perfect wheels. Rather than pay over the odds for some tomorrow just because they're the only ones you can find. Very Happy
