Trans failsafe prog

Hi

Ive a 2005 td6 which had a new box fitted by lr in May 2011 @92934 miles, vehicle mileage now at 128k

I recently changed the oil and filter in the box (with correct grade of oil) and noticed some metal on the magnet in the sump (very fine and no large lumps) the old oil did not look black or smell burnt, also changed the transfer and diff oils.

I drove 550 miles down to Essex with no problems and got to within 70 miles of home on my return journey but when I pushed the button to resume cruise control the vehicle pulled back like it was put into a gear which was to low for the speed and then the Trans failsafe prog came on Crying or Very sad

Ive just put a new battery on and still the same problem, also checked that the high/low gears work and they do, also the cruise control works but no kickdown in failsafe.

IDD Tool shows Gear monitor 5 fault (general fault 0x37) and Trans interface Bus fault (0x59)

When i clear the faults it drives and changes as normal but after a mile it goes back to Trans failsafe prog.

Looking at the paperwork from the gearbox change by l/r i cant see any mention of the T/C been changed (unless someone from Cambuslang Glasgow area just happens to be a member on here Smile and can say otherwise )

So my question is could this be the T/C or a speed sensor or any other sensor that is playing up?

Regards

The metal you describe on the magnet, this is normal.
Thats what the magnet is there for I would not be concerned at this at all.
Sorry cant help with the fault codes.
Possible check the fluid level in trans again.
Brake light switch on pedal is another possible.

Yes works ok in manual changes up and down no problem but after half a mile it goes into failsafe, also tried it in auto and again goes thru the gears with no problem but then once again goes into failsafe.

Had cleaned the brake switch connector before doing the above so presume ive ruled the switch out Sad

UPDATE on the box:-

Having done a recent oil and filter change with very little metal on the magnet and only travelled about 1000 miles before i got the Failsafe come up, I decided to drop the sump back off the box and it now has loads of metal some fine and some large bits so i guess the torque converter has broken up and i would think has damaged the autobox which only had just over 30 k use on it Big Cry

Im in the north east of Scotland does anyone know of a decent autobox repair garage up here ?

Sorry to hear that mate.
Those sodding GM boxes are rubbish.
What fluid did you refill with?

It's a pain Crying or Very sad The fluid I put in on the change was Texamatic 7045E which was not cheap and as it turns out didn't get much use

I find it really confusing that Land rover could claim the GM box as being sealed for life, especially with a mineral based fluid.
Most likely your FF has had another Trans fitted during its previous 92,000 miles and soon to see a third.

Texamatic 7045E is a pretty low spec fluid for such a late model vehicle, I would have thought that it would be using a synthetic fluid.
Check out Liqimoly for a better fluid.

You look to have covered about 35,000 miles since the last rebuild this is obviously ridiculous for a modern vehicle to be experiencing repetitive trans failures, Im surprised Landrover have not had class actions levelled at them over the reliability issues encountered with the GM trans.

Not sure if you view the Aussie forum aulro.com.au there are some mods being done (during rebuilding) in Melbourne on the GM box that seem to be fixing the issues encountered with this trans.

I would drive a diesel in your model if it had the ZF behind it, I have no idea why Landrover didnt stick with the ZF right across the whole range.

I think this is probably more to do with the quality of the rebuilt box than anything else, it is easy to do the minimum on rebuild to get it to last outside the warranty period and little more...

Lots of back street places, and a few front street places selling dodgy rebuilds in the UK...

You really need to find somewhere that has a good track record of rebuilding boxes.... Pete

Just to update on the problem, I got a recon box and torque converter from Mackie Transmissions in Glasgow ( the place is huge and they have very good reviews) total cost £1840 also got new oil cooler, both pipes, o seals and pipe clamp from Dan @ Duckworth around £400 the lot.
Popped it all back in the car cleared the fault codes and all is happy again 😀😀😀
Thanks for the advise received.
Will now await the next problem to turn up 😙😙😙😙

Good news.remember the oil cooler is dependent on the bottom 5 rows of the radiator, so most of these older ones have had at least one new radiator.
