Replacing the oil filter housing in an L322 4.4 v8

Has anyone replaced the oil filter housing on a 4.4 v8 petrol. At the annual service the other month the indie mentioned I was missing the centre pipe inside the housing although it was nothing major. This was Strange because they didn't mention this last year and they have been the only guys working on it.

Anyway if it's not too involved and I can get access then I might just replace the entire housing myself.

If the pipe in the middle of that is missing then it's not working as a filter, the oil will just go straight through it......

Should be easy enough to change though, two pipes and two fixings... Pete

Cheers. It looks like its only secured on with the 2 screws at the top although I need to take a proper look at it in the daylight.

Assuming the fittings are the same as the earlier ones, the rubber cotton real mounts will fall to bits when you undo the nuts. I drilled out what was left of mine and replaced them with some M6 bolts with a couple of bits of fuel hose as a spacer. The new mounts are £7 each from Land-Rover, and apparently they all fail!

Other than that it's just a couple of hose fittings on the bottom.

when the previous guy changed the oil, he obviously threw it out with the filter. i think it unscews and you then pull it out of the filter, and screw it back in.

you're supposed to just be able to pull the filter off of it in situ, as you do the filter releases a valve in the bottom to let the oil drain out of the housing.

Previous bloke probably just didn't know what he was doing.

and possibly did more harm than good, leaving the oil filter 'bypassed' - for a full service term.

exactly, but saying that if the engine is still ok, then while it's probably shortened the engines over all life, it might only mean the bearings fail at 300k instead of 700k.

I think i might be inclined to put some flushing oil through it or change the oil and filter again after a thousand miles or so to get rid of any filth that's accumulated in there.

What's confusing me most is why they indie didn't mention this last year when they serviced the car. No one else has worked on the car. The service this year was just an annual oil service (only done 3500 miles in the last 12 months) but I paid good money for the major service last year.

It's all pointing like I should find a new LR independent.

I'll check the car tomorrow but I understand it's the centre pipe/ cylinder rather than the pipe attached to the filter housing lid that is missing.

went i changed my filter, it fell to bits, and the plastic end cap was stuck in the bottom. I did try removing the centre pipe to get the end cap out but it seemed pretty solid.

Had to break the cap up with a screw driver in the end.
