Frustrating Indicator problem M62 03

Hi Everyone

I have a very frustrating intermittent Indicator problem which also puts the park lights on and causes the battery to drain.

The RHS indicators sometimes flash without the stalk being pushed to the right. This normally happens when started up in the morning but can last up to 15 minutes. Very annoying and very confusing for other drivers! If driven every day it tends to occur less.

I asked a local specialist to plug in (using Testbook?) and we could see the computer showing all of the indicators both left and right flicking from active to inactive constantly, even when the indicators were not actually coming on.

The problem exists even if the indicator stalk is disconnected.

The independent specialist spoke to Land Rover technical and they have suggested that it is the light check circuit causing the problem within the BECM. The BECM has been ordered but it appears Land Rover don't have any stock and I have been waiting for weeks now.

Has anyone come across anything like this? From my research on here it looks like the Indicators are controlled by the LCM (Which I believe is in the drivers footwell?) not the BECM (Under the drivers seat?). I could buy a second hand BECM from ebay and fit to see if it cures the problem.

If it is the LCM then I know it will need to be coded to match the mileage

Worried that if I ever get the part it will be the wrong one and I am back to square one with a RR that either won't start due to a flat battery or has constantly flashing RHS indicators.

Mine did the same when i drowned it in a river, the BECM was underwater, was fine when taken out and cleaned and dried properly (it's under the passenger seat by the way) My LCM did not get wet.... so I would think your problem lies within the BECM, AFAIK these have to be coded to the vehicle and I did read somewhere that you can't recode a second hand one.... this maybe rubbish though...

If it was me I'd get the one you have reconditioned by one of the many places now on Google... Pete

Possibly unrelated, but my parents old Citroen C5, started doing random stuff just like that. A new battery cured it.

Thank you. That is very useful.

Is it easy to take out and then open the unit up? Did you just clean it with some contact cleaner and then dry off in the airing cupboard? I may well try that first if you had such success with it getting dunked.

mine has never been wet (to my knowledge) but may have got damp due to severe condensation following a boot full of water problem. Now fixed!


I am 99.99% sure it is not battery related as I have put a new battery on it and it has made no difference. Although this battery will be dead soon if I don't get it fixed.

Passenger seat out, four bolts and one large elec plug (don't turn ign on with seat unplugged or you get a airbag light and need an IID tool or similar to reset it) It's pretty heavy and you have to be careful you don't wreck the door card getting it out... Disconnect the battery first, procedure in the WIKI (Link top right of this page)

It's then underneath a plastic lid... Taking it apart is obvious when it's out...

The reason they don't like water is the impurities in it will damage the board when it dries out, you wash it with deionized water then contact cleaner...

It maybe too late for yours but worth a try...

To remove the plug, use a screwdriver as in this shot



BECM is under the black bit...



Only had 1p under my seat, hope you find more Thumbs Up

This particular fault doesn't sound like battery related to me...

Do you have a tow bar? I'm wondering if the lighting electrics in the back got wet...

Thank you for the details and photo's. That looks like a weekend job.

The trailer point is interesting as I do have a genuine tow bar that has trailer check controls in it. Presumably I can just disconnect the trailer module as car's without a tow bar will just have a spare plug on the loom not used.

I may try that first as it should be simple. Does anyone know where the module is in the boot and what it looks like?

Right hand cover in boot (fusebox behind) you will see a white box around the size of a fag packet, in line & just behind your drivers side rear light. There is a white plug (next to the box) that’s the loom that goes to your trailer socket and ECU, simply unplug the white plug sir Thumbs Up

Typically the indicators did not come on (own their own) at all yesterday.

I have still unplugged the trailer plug and will see how it goes for the next few days. If it starts up again I will move to the BECM

Update.....

Towbar module not at fault
BECM cleaned and replaced - did not resolve
BECM replaced for a brand new one at a cost of £230 for the part and reprogrammed using testbook - did not resolve!

Have one remaining fault which is EEPROG in the LCM. A new one is £350 and I am really keen not to have to spend that much.

I have bought a used one for £45 on ebay but I know that it holds the VIN and Mileage from the Instrument cluster. My question is will testbook be able to reprogram?

If not can I reprogram it to match my VIN/Mileage. There seems to be a lot of chat on BMW forums about this but nothing on here that I can find

Help!

I know when I fit the used LCM tonight it will show up with a tamper dot on the instrument cluster as the VIN numbers will not match

Well fitted the new (used) LCM tonight. Lights all function correctly but I have two black dots within the mileage on the trip miles as expected

no other errors...will see if this cures it over the next few days

If anyone knows anything about reprogramming the VIN/Mileage I would love to know

I had the same prob with mine and fitting a used LCM sorted it. I just live with the tamper dot and made a note of when it was changed. I think anybody buying a 10 year old vehicle if shown why there is tamper dot and shown the exchanged part ( I have kept the old one) would understand. 2010 3.6TDV8 Stornoway Grey/ Black interior - gone
2005 4.4V8 (M62) Bonatti Grey/ Parchment interior - gone
1998 4.6HSE Blue/ Cream interior (can't remember exact colours) - gone
1977 White - gone (should have kept)
