Solar Trickle Charger - any advice?

Having been caught out a couple of times with a depleted battery when leaving my 2006 TD6 parked at the airport, I thought that the answer might be a solar trickle charger placed on the dashboard and connected to a live cigar lighter.

A forum search did not come up with anything. Has anyone tried this as a solution?

Given that it shouldn't be the case I would say you either have a small drain or a knackered battery. If it were me I would fix the problem, not mask it over. My car was fine at the airport for 3 weeks over Christmas and New Year, started just fine when I got back. Just my 2p.

"you either have a small drain or a knackered battery."
Yes, I am aware how these cars seem to eat batteries. I have had my TD6 for 8 years now, and have had to replace the battery about every two years. I have also read the threads here about battery depletion, and it does seem to vary from car to car and from place to place. Airport car parks are the worst, where owners of adjacent Land Rovers and BMWs operate their key fobs and wake other cars from sleep mode. I also know that once a modern battery is fully depleted, it is never the same again, so a solar trickle charger seems like a good idea. Now I just need to find a cigar lighter which is permanently live!

I have this theory that if you leave it at the airport with the window open, unlocked, and with the keys in the ignition it will be safer than a locked one.... I mean thieves will think it's a bait car and leave it well alone...

I just need someone to test it for me Whistle Whistle Whistle

I know it changes from year to year but the one in the boot of the center cubby box maybe permanent live...

If not see this thread, if you remove your relay and put in a bridge they should become permanent...

If you're replacing the battery every 2 years then perhaps look at AGM as a solution. I did this on an 07 TDV8 when it was only doing short runs and I was using the FBH. Details in this thread.

Many thanks, and I have found that the socket in the boot of the 56 reg TD6 is permanently live, so problem solved. I have always used Bosch batteries up till now, but I read that AGM are good.

A bit off topic I know, but I am passing the TD6 on to my son in law, and I know he is away a lot too, so I wanted a solution. I have just taken delivery of a 2011 Vogue TDV8. I have found that just two or three minutes with the AV system on whilst programming radio stations causes the system to shut down with a demand to start the engine. Is this normal, or do I have a new battery problem?
